HELP!!
My doctor required a two week pre-op diet, as well. It was much easier than I expected it to be, because I knew how important it was for me to have a positive outcome with my surgery. The NUT told our nutrition group that this diet is required, as it is used to shrink our livers before surgery, allowing for easier access to our stomachs. She scared me when she followed up with the fact that my surgeon has opened people up, and if their liver was too "flabby" and it was too difficult for him to get to our stomachs, he would just end the surgery right there. Boom. No sleeve/RNY. I would have been totally DISGUSTED with myself if that had happened, so I took that diet seriously. I didn't want the one chance I had for surgery to be for nothing, because I couldn't control my eating for two weeks. I had my two protein shakes a day, my one sensible low carb/high protein dinner, my lc/hp snacks and 1/2 a serving of fruit per day. I gave up caffeine, Coca Cola (the LOVE of my life), eating out, chips, chocolate, cake, etc., in the hopes that one day, I'd actually feel good both physically and emotionally about myself. And here I am, 3 1/2 months out. I've lost 53lbs and am down from a plus size 22/24 to a regular misses size 16! And, most importantly, I'm off of my blood pressure and cholesterol meds, my thyroid med has been reduced, and I'm no longer pre-diabetic. What more can I ask for? It's been an amazing journey with a few bumps along the road, but those bumps are so worth the results I'm seeing now. The gas was uncomfortable, the nausea was (at the time) the most awful feeling I had experienced, but I made it. I've had a few case of the grouches (*****iness) around 2 months out, but here I am - the happiest I've been in years. As everyone keeps telling you, "Keep your eye on the prize." Your health is that prize. I'm so glad I had my VSG.

I think we all get anxious as the surgery gets closer. Wonder are we crazy to ask for pain etc. but this is the best thing you will ever do for yourself. I had gas pain after previous surgeries but had none after my WLS. I was up and walking as soon as I was awake after the procedure and just kept walking. I can also say I was pretty pain free. Tried hard not to twist etc so the incisions wouldn't hurt. I did almost 3 weeks on a liver shrink diet. First two were two shakes a day and then a small salad and light dinner (Smart one, lean cuisine type size) . I could put fruit in my shakes if I wanted to and even have a 3 rd one, which I never needed. I found making them like smoothies with lots of ice and sipping on them for hours worked better for me than just drinking them down. The last 4 days were all liquid ones. Traveled across the country and to Mexico on clear liquids with protein in them. Did fine. I won't say it is easy but anything worth having is worth working for. You will do fine and all good wishes for you upcoming surgery.
You should still be super excited for your surgery. You are doing a great thing for yourself. I am just over one week since my surgery and I was prepared to feel all of this pain afterwards, but either I can tolerate a lot of pain or I just didn't experience as bad as I was reading. I am back at work and doing great. You will do great. Nervous are common for all of us but like everyone else is say. You'll do awesome!!!!! Good luck to you.
The two week liquid diet was the hardest part for me. After surgery I had way more pain than I expected but it only lasted a couple of days. It's a serious major surgery, if you weren't nervous it would be abnormal. Going through with the sugery is the best thing I've done in my life personally. EVEN THOUGH I gained 9lbs in the 10 days after surgery even though I was on protein shakes alone LOL. It all worked out in the end, now I'm almost three months out and feeling better than I have in a very very long time. Congratulations on your date! the pain and weird things that happen are all part of the growing process, turning into a new you
Everyone has different experiences after the surgery so I wouldn't worry too much about it. I had absolutely no gas pain and hardly any incision pain; the worst I had was nausea from a pain med which went away as soon as they switched me to a different one. Try not to overthink it. Your body will respond to the surgery however it responds and you just have to try to make the best of it. Walking after surgery is really important and will help with a lot of the discomfort. I was on a 10 day pre-op diet and I won't say it was easy because it definitely wasn't. It is very important though and will set you up for the liquid phase you will be on after surgery. It seemed to get better after the third day so hopefully it will be the same for you. Hang in there! I'm not far out from my surgery and although I've had small struggles, I can already say it has all been worth it. Try to concentrate on the positive and keep coming here for support. Best of luck!
No gas pains. No prolonged, pre-diet. Just had a clear liquid diet the day before the surgery, to clean everything out. Everything went fine for the surgery. I over thunk it as well. Constantly on my mind, before. Gave me headaches thinking about it. Finally I decided not to think about it any more and just do it. Wheeling into the operating room, I still wanted to jump off the gurney, but knew that if I didn't go through with this now, I'd never ever do it and I'd probably never know life as a thin person ever again. I shut my mind off and just did it. Absolutely no regrets now. I'm very glad I did it. Wish you well, and Quit Thinking!
I was also on a 2 week pre-op diet that was liquids only (shakes, water, fat-free broth, and sugar-free popsicles - that's it). Its always the worst at the beginning but soon you won't even remember those two weeks. Totally worth it!
It's normal to be anxious and nervous prior to surgery. As a person who has never had any surgery in their life prior, I can totally understand having second thoughts. If watching videos is making your anxiety worse, I would recommend staying off YouTube! While its great to be educated and have an idea of what to expect, you also have to remember that each person's experience is different.
I had absolutely zero gas pains or gas-related effects post-op. My pain was muscular where my tummy muscles were tightened - but mostly when getting in/out of bed, and I was off pain killers on Day 2. Never had to take Gas X or anything like that.
