Low Vitamin D

Mine was 10 also but I was able to get it up before surgery but it took a year to get it up from 10 to 45. I was on 50, 000 units of prescription Vitamin D for about four or five months and it was not doing much of anything to raise my levels. So the dosage was increased to 100,000 (50,000 twice a week) and I have been on this for about 7 or 8 months.

I don't think it would have affected my surgery and I don't think it will yours either.

The problem with prescription Vitamin D that everyone has mention is that it is Vitamin D2. Our bodies no not use D2 directly. It has to be converted internally to D3 first. Very little of that 50,000 units of D2 are absorbed and used. Plus, much D, both prescription and over the counter, are packed in oil, in the form of gel filled football shaped things. Anything packed in oil is not absorbed as well either.

And, your insurance copay is likely higher than just getting an over the counter DRY D3 capsule or tablet. You will absorb much more of the vitamin, you can get your levels up quicker, maintain them better, and save some money.

For the life of me, I cannot undersrand why anyone is still prescribing vitamin D2. It's inconceivable.
