Daily calorie goal confusion

At my two-week followup with my surgeon after surgery, he said the same thing as your nutritionist -- "Eat 1000 a day or your metabolism will shut down." My reaction -- "Whaaaaa.....????"

It was the only time I did not follow his advice, first because I simply was not able at that time to eat 1000/day, and later because I saw I was losing weight just fine at 600-700 calories/day.

I have an appointment to see him in April (1 year, 2 months post-op) and I plan to ask him the same questions you raise. I suspect he will have changed his tune a bit. I'll let you know.

At one month Post-op 1000 calories seems like a lot. I would focus on am I getting enough grams of protein in those calories. I know they say 60-80g but I think most people work up to 80g as being the minimum.

I am getting about 100 grams of protein a day. I could probably cut down on that, cut out one of my protein shakes (i drink 2 usually a day). That will save me calories too. I will let you know what my doctor says today, I have an appt this afternoon.

Thanks!

My plan never consisted of counting calories. We were told protein first, carbs second. Not once did I count my calories. I know all plans are different. Now as I approach my goal I do try and keep my calories lower, but protein is always my first goal.

Since about 1 month out, I was eating 800 calories a day, and have successfully lost without issue. Now I'm about 8 months out and average around 900-1000 a day.

Your meals look good to me - but question: Why the two protein shakes? It seems like you're getting decent protein from just your food, and those shakes also have all this other icky crap in them, are typically high in calories, and do little to keep you full and satisfied. I know each plan is different, but my surgeon wanted me to get off shakes as soon as I could get the minimum needed protein (65g at least) a day, from food alone.

I didn't to the math, but you should be eating 60 to 80gms of protein.  You might be short of that -- that is prob the real concern of your nutritionalist.

Personally,  I loved that I could forget about calories - focus on protein and small volume - I needed the break from perpetual dieting. Either way you approach it though - you have to focus on getting all that protein in - and you make choices to keep the calories low.

1000 is typical for long term postWLS success (600-800 during the losing phasse) - but either way, you should be tracking the protein.
