Daily calorie goal confusion

My nutrionist says I should be eating 1000 calories a day, but everything I've read on this page says 600 to 800. I am eating about 650, average daily menu below.

Should I be eating more? Is the whole "body is starving and holding on to food" a myth?

Breakfast: 3 ounces of scrambled egg beaters

Lunch: 3 ounces of meat and veggies (usually chicken, onions, green chilis and green peppers)

Dinner: 3 ounces of chicken, extra lean ground beef or pork.

Snack: 1 light sargento string cheese

Protein: two premier protein shakes

Should I eat higher calorie meals?

Thanks for the advice!

Looks like you have lost 22.6 lbs since surgery a month ago.  You are doing well.  Great weight loss pre op. Stick to what you are eating it will come off.

Do you think you are expecting too much?  You were frustrated a few days ago because you only lost 20 pounds and now your ticker shows -22.6, that's almost 3 pounds in less than a week!

I've actually gained that back, hence my question about calorie intake.

Starvation mode is an absolute myth. It is outdated thinking and there is plenty of scientific evidence to debunk the theory. "Normal" people are encouraged to never eat below 1000-1200 calories per day, but we are not normal and have to lose a boat load of weight.

Most medically supervised diets (which technically you are on) promote very low calories for quick weight loss. the 600-800 calorie plan is completely sustainable and as long as you eat enough protein your body will not cannibalize itself.

You'll need to make the choice of what to do, but looking at your meal plan it looks fine. You actually are eating more than I did at the same point post surgery, so if you can keep it steady there, you will lose nicely. You may not lose daily (many people do not), but over time you will.

Do you think I am eating too much? Should I cut back?

No, but I would not make my portion sizes bigger any time soon!

At 1 month post op I was barely able to eat 2 oz of deli meat. I could eat 2 turkey deli roll ups. That was it. I couldn't finish an entire scrambled egg. For the first month my calorie intake was between 400 and 500 calories. By three months I was in the standard 600-800 range averaging 700 to 750 calories per day. I stayed in that basic range until goal weight.

Hmm...I wonder if my doctor didn't make my sleeve small enough. I have a follow up on Monday so I will talk to him. Thanks for the feedback Kairk!

It might be a bit early to know whether your sleeve size is too big or just right.  There is a fair amount of swelling in the initial weeks (months?.)  As that swelling goes down, capacity increases.  Some people have less swelling to begin with and/or faster swelling reduction.

Best wishes in your journey!

Your nerve endings haven't healed yet either. You don't feel your capacity the way you will at 3 months out. Once you start eating solid dense protein you will see your restriction take over.
