Horrible constipation

Nothing like a little TMI to start your morning :P

I am terribly constipated and have been for a few days. I can hardly sit it hurts so much. I'm drinking all my water, adding miralax to my protein shakes, and walking but I am still miserable.

Does anyone have ways to get fast relief? I am at work but can hardly sit at my desk because of the pain and uncomfortableness. It also makes my back hurt! Is this normal? At what point does it become an emergency?

I had that same feeling about 12 months ago and it was an Ischemic colitis attack!  not fun at all.  Never had an issue with colitis before or since.

If you start feeling a little lightheaded or dizzy go to the doctor.    I ended up passing out, then to emergency, hospitalized for a week . . . followed by 3 colonoscopies, yada yada yada.

You can always try a suppository for fast relief. But also try milk of magnesia before going to bed. I am 4 months post op and have to use it twice a week. Good luck!

I'm about 1.5 months post op, and have had to use milk of magnesia twice. It works well when I do take it.

I am now adding beneficent to my beverages (including protein shakes), and I take colace twice daily. I was taking the colace once a day, but my stools were almost impossible to pass. Now, other than timing (I go only every five days or so), things are pretty much back to normal for me.

I was in this exact same boat shortly after surgery and a couple times afterwards.  Liquid suppositories were my answer.  Easy, quick relief!  These are the ones I used and found them easily at Walgreeens.

I found my back pain to be from the amount and intensity of the straining I was doing while trying to go.

Best of luck to you...I know how horrible it is!

If you're that uncomfortable, I'd suggest calling your surgeon's office to see if you can talk to a nurse or PA. They can advise you on what to do, or if you need to come into the office or ER.

Oh yeah, that stinks.... Some people do take more than one dose of Miralax in a given day. If I am having problems with the physical actual passing of it... I have found the Fleet liquid glycerin suppositories work best and quickest. They are more expensive than the other kind of suppositories but I think work much better, quick and no cramping...

When you get home, that being the key word, take some milk of magnesia. That will clear you out. Not very fun, but very effective. Good luck.

I did the suppository and let me say, damn! Worked within minutes. Thank you all, I feel a thousand pounds lighter. The scale disagrees but the pain is gone :)
