From consultation to operation?

Hi all, I've just begun my research into having VSG and wonder approximately how much time lapsed between your surgery consultation, to all the tests, to the actual surgery date? I know all insurances are different, etc., I'm just looking for an idea of how much time I'm looking at. I want to have surgery yesterday! LOL Thanks in advance.

welcome to the forum.  I hope you find it as informative and supportive as I have.

My program said the average for them was 3 months from initial consultation to surgery.  My insurance required a 90 day pre-op diet, and I had my surgery 3.5 months after initial consultation.

I'd suggest asking your program what is typical for them.

Best of luck,

Carol

Hello like you I am early on in my process.  I had my initial consultation on 1/8/2016.  My surgeons office said that was approval was given from my insurance company it would be about a month and a half for the surgery.  My insurance really didn't require a lot which as a certain BMI, a meeting with a nutritionist to talk about the lifestyle change and to make me aware of that, and a psych evaluation within the last 12 months prior to surgery.  I go to the Psych on Friday. So I'm hoping to have a surgery date soon.  Good luck on your journey and new lifestyle!!!

My insurance company only required a psych eval.  I met with my surgeon for the first time on 12/2/2013 and I had surgery 3/13/2014.

Even though I had RNY, the pre-op hoops they make you jump through are the same. It was about 3 months.

I did call my insurance company and they emailed their policy on WLS. It required 6 months of weights. Luckily I was able to get that from Docs visits and had had a colonoscopy where they took my weight. So it didn't have to be visits with the surgeon. Some Insurances require 6 months of supervised weight loss visits....

A lot of insurance companies require a 6 month supervised program before they will approve you. Some have 2 or 3 years of requirements. Some have none.

The only way you'll find out is to ask them.

For me it was a six month process. It flew by and I'm thankful my insurance company required it. I saw the NUT, Psych, Exercise Physiologist & my Doctor every month for six months. I learned a lot in that process and I think it has allowed me to be successful. After my six months I was referred to my surgeon and I had surgery within three weeks of the referral from the weight loss center. Good luck to you. Remember taking your time is okay, we didn't put the weigh on over night so it may take a little time.
