The fact that Dr. Oz reported on this makes me WAY skeptical.

That said, I dug into the original science-- here's some official info from the researchers. The verdict is that they managed to reduce the calories by 10-12% in one specific type of rice.

I wouldn't count on it to give anyone a free pass to eat all the rice they want. But it's a neat bit of research, and I'm looking into seeing where else they can apply the chemistry!

I very much agree about the free pass, and hopefully posters *****ad through the thread are cognizant of this. On the other hand, it is very simple to reduce by the 10%-12%, so that is certianly worth doing IMHO. I am a rice avoider due to the impact on the blood sugar, but I do really like some with a stir fry... or my favorite which is coconut rice. So a little here and there and skim off what I can with the calories :)

As soon as I saw "Dr. Oz" in this post, I hoped you'd chime in!

I don't like rice well enough to play around with its carb/resistant carb effects. To me, rice is an empty carb, to be eaten occasionally in tiny quantities, like that in sushi.

Even if you find you can eat it without its affecting blood sugar much, it's still nutritionally empty. It doesn't seem worth the bother to me.

I tried this when I was paleo long before WLS, and it spiked my blood sugar like crazy.  It also kicked me out of ketosis so I gained like 10lbs of water weight.  Of course, everyone's body is different, and I am infuriatingly insulin resistant whereas others are not so.

I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!
