How long was your process before actually having the surgery?

I have United Healthcare through my employer. I decided in May 2014 that I wanted surgery, went to the surgeon's orientation in June 2014, and had surgery in August of 2014. I could have had it in July but it didn't fit my travel schedule.

No supervised diet, no pre-op diet, no psych eval, no nutritionist meeting, just an EKG and bloodwork the day before. This is not typical.

Self pay with Dr Alvarez in Mexico....researched him and the VSG for about 4 years before taking the plunge (wish I did this Years ago!!!!)

From sending the email to surgery date was under 2 months...only due to finding a cheap plane ticket, and planning my few days off from work :)

I waited 16 months from GP referral to program orientation.  After that, it was five months from orientation to surgery, for me.

Six months, almost to the day. Information session April 22nd, surgery October 19th. I'm thankful for the lag time, as I was sure going into surgery that I'd made the right choice and that it wasn't a spur of the moment decision.

It is very contingent on what your insurance dictates unfortunately. I am blessed- I was not required to complete the supervised 6 month diet. I did have a long list of tests that needed to be completed first, and that took me about 2 months to complete. By the time you factor in scheduling the date and getting the insurance approval post testing it was a 3 month proces- very fast relatively. The only ones who can really do it faster are the self-pays who are not required to do all of the testing. You will be so glad you did it, so no matter how long it will take you stick with it!

I started new around March 15th, and had surgery June 22nd.  Most of that was waiting for specialists.  I had surgery then started my clinical internship a few weeks later.

I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!
