To coffee or not?
Before surgery I had a homemade latte every morning and was addicted to the caffeine from it. About a month before I got myself off of it and went through 3 days of the horrible headaches and no energy. So for the last 3 months I have been caffeine free. Recently I started letting myself have a healthier version 2 days a week. This is sugar free and I feel like it is such a treat and does give me a boost of energy. Having one cup is okay on my plan so my question is for those of you that do drink coffee do you add protein to it and count it as your breakfast? Also if you were caffeine free and went back to it do you regret it? Part of me feels silly for wanting to get myself addicted to it again but I really enjoy it and with giving up so many other things I feel this is minor. Please give me your honest opinions. I see nothing bad about coffee in and of itself. It's the excessive use of it that may be problematic in terms of negative caffeine impact. Some programs limit coffee in the early post op phase to ensure patients ate drinking enough water, but that's it.
The only limitation I see is the amount of calories you're adding to it. It's the 'don't drink your calories' rule that's more important. If you're adding more than say 30 calories to your coffee, you may need to adjust your formula unless it's a protein based coffee that is essentially your breakfast or snack.

I have only ever drank one cup a day so I don't see that becoming a problem. More than that it really effects me, gives me the shakes and makes me feel wired. It's a fine line for me so that's no biggie. I agree with the not drinking our calories so I think I will experiment with different add ins, I can't do black, blich! :)

I gave up the coffee initially - and eventually went back to 1 iced a day - with whole milk and non-sugar flavor shot. I don't and have never added protein to it. Unfortunately, I don't think I could get through the day without the caffeine. It has never bothered me or adversely affected my weight.

i have coffee every day and have since a month after surgery. just good strong coffee with a splash of half and half. dr. thinks it is an appetite suppressant. some people like the chike protein coffee drinks. i like the real thing and then have yogurt. i do treat myself to expensive coffees if i like them. diane
