VSG with hiatal hernia or??
I started my weight loss surgery journey back in April. I first went into it thinking about getting the LAPBAND but ended up deciding to get the VSG.
I recently had my UPPER GI done and they discovered I had a hiatal hernia which is odd because I don't have a ton of heartburn and the doctor was surprised I never had flare ups.
At my next Bariatric Appt. my surgeon spoke me with about how some of the complications with VSG can be problems with severe heart burn caused by your body kind of creating its own hiatal hernia, since your stomach is now smaller and can slip slightly up into your esophagus. It said he has no issue with fixing the hernia I already have and that will be very easy.
However he is concerned that my stomach will just slide back up and suggested I look into bypass surgery instead since my stomach will be reattached to my bowls and it will help hold it down. (I hope that make sense)
I need to lose 100 pounds and my bmi is 41.8 so I am worried that bypass will cause me to lose the weight too fast or too much weight. (sounds selfish I know) I really am still leaning towards going ahead with VSG but wanted to see if anyone out there has dealt with the same thing and still done VSG. My doctor also said worst case after VSG if I have severe heartburn they can go back and do bypass.
Any advice at all would be great!

You may want to get a second opinion from another bariatric surgeon or gastroenterologist. Switching to RNY is a major surgery, and if you can just have the hernia repaired that would probably be easiest.

My surgeon warned me in advance about the potential for a hiatal hernia and said 1 in 2 patients have them and they are generally a quick repair that adds 20-30 minutes onto surgery. I ended up having a hiatal hernia on my diaphragm (usually it is esophagus) and they repaired it and told me after. It has been no big deal and I didn't even know it was there.
I had a hiatal hernia & a very mild case of gerd. The hernia was repaired at surgery & the ppi I took was for a month b4 surgery & a couple of months after. I haven't had a problem since then. It's possible to get gerd with the vsg, if I have to I'd revise to the rny, but I'll cross that bridge when & if I get there.
