Two days out and lots of pain

hi all

i had my sleeve done on Tuesday the 14th. Went smoothly, no complications. They did a barium swallow test to check for leaks and I was solid.

In the hospital I had a morphine pump and wasn't feeling much pain. Come home last night and the pain hit me like crazy. I am in Vicodin but it only helps so much.

so my question is for folks who  have been sleeved. Were you in. Lot of pain afterwards or not so much?

My pain was mostly gas pains. Walking around plus using a heating pad helped me. I only had to take pain meds for about 4 days so it does get better.

I don't remember much pain - I did have pain at the incision where the instruments went in and out - and what I think was a pulled back muscle.  I did not use pain meds as they make me feel worse than the pain.  Hope you feel better soon.

My pain was mostly gas pains which was greatly alleviated by walking 5-10 mins every 1-2 hours. Please walk often to help this, plus it helps prevent blood clots. Some incision pain and general aches. I did not stay on pain meds past 3 days because of risk of constipation. Moving around helps, truly. Walk, walk, walk. Sip, sip, sip.

I had the sleeve done on May 28 (2015) and didn't have a morphine pump, but the nursing staff checked frequently to see if I needed pain meds. There was discomfort from the six incisions and when the surgical glue on one incision came off early. I had the most trouble with sharp pain on my right side whenever I tried to lie down or sit up, and I was using the recommended method of first rolling to one side and then using my arms to push myself up. I was told later that the use of a retractor during surgery can irritate muscles (irritated muscles are not happy muscles). That went away eventually, but it hurt to sneeze or cough for a few weeks.

I think the combination of feeling weak, tired, sore, and not being able to eat or drink much is a lot to deal with. It does get better!

People tolerate pain differently, so it's really hard to compare. You had major surgery, but it should get a little better every day.

Grim_Traveller, my husband is about the size you were when you started and is considering the sleeve, how long ago did you have your surgery and are there any issues or recommendations that you have that might help him in his decision.  Thank you.

I'm 10 days post op.  In addition to (and they hoped in place of ) the oxycodone, my doc had me on 960 mg on liquid Tylenol and 1000 mg liquid ibuprofen (or 5 small tablets over 30 min) every 4-6 hours. I think these helped more with staving off breakthrough pain.  You should ask them about supplemental pain relief.
