Why is my hair starting to thin 6 months after my surgery. What do I do? I'm not doing anything different.

Many people experience this after surgery, it's called "telogen effluvium" and it's totally normal.

For me, it started at about month 4 and was pretty much finished by month 9 or so. Search for "hair loss" in the search bar and you can find what happened for lots of other posters.

It does end, thank goodness! And there's some stuff you can do in the meantime. Some people do clip-in extensions, or opt for a short, shaggy haircut. I kept my hair in a pixie and got some hair-building fibers to cover the thin patches, and sometimes I'd hit my scalp with a bit of brown eyeshadow to help.

Yes, it happens.  My hair loss started at 3 months out, and lasted until about 7 months out.  In my 9th month post surgery, I had a healthy crop of short hairs sticking straight up on top of my head.  And I didn't even mind that I looked scruffy!  I was just so happy to see them.

I had to use a body building cream on my hair, and blow dry it to get enough volume so it looked ok.  I did that for about 6 months from 6 months to a year.  After that, it looked ok without.  I thought about buying a wig, but didn't need to.  It was a bother, but the benefits of losing weight outweighed the negatives of hair loss - big time! .  And it does grow back.  Its not fun, but it works out ok.

best wishes,

Carol

I anticipate this, not looking forward to it, but my hair is already short. How MUCH is going to come out?  Is it thinning or is it clumps like a cancer patient?  That part I can't find explained anywhere.

When I comb my hair clumps of hair are coming out.

My hair loss became BAD at months 5-8...by the end of my first year post-op I lost at least half of my hair (according to my hair guy).  It eventually came back but I was definitely one of those that took much, much longer than others to see that happen :-(
