Different doctors different advice

I have a friend thst had the gastric bypass and her doctor let her eat solid foods three weeks out. My cousin had the gastric sleeve and had to be on clear liquids two weeks before surgery. I had the gastric sleeve and had to be on clear liquids for five days before my surgery. It's just real confusing when you have other doctors telling their patients something different. I follow what my doctor says but i just confusing when other people have had the same or similar surgeries and they are already eating. It just doesn't seem right

Different doctors have different techniques and have figured out what works best for their patients.  I don't really think it's that confusing - just follow what your own doctor recommends (unless it's really, really wrong).

I think there are some "best practices," but then the doctor's modify it based on personal experience. For example, in my program I went to solid foods in week 4, but a few months later, the program changed the guidelines so that solids weren't allowed until the 6th week.  They changed the guidelines because some patients were having problems.

I don't think you'll ever figure it out by comparing with others.  You just have to trust your doctor's advice.

best wishes,

Carol

It is not just pre-op and post-op after the hospital.  My surgeon said nothing by mouth until the first blood test results came back the next day.  My wife's surgeon gave her ice chips immediately after surgery.  The NPO for 24 hours was pure torture.

A friend of mine said that his surgeon told him he could eat or drink whatever he felt he could tolerate after the surgery. He started eating solid food one week after surgery. He had no problems and reached his target weight easily.

From his experience and those on the forum here, I can only conclude that there is no standard procedure in this area. It is confusing, as you said, but the best plan is to follow your surgeon's recommendations. That way, if you have complications after surgery, it's easier for the doc to pinpoint the trouble.
