how do I find my target heart rate?

Shoot for 50-85% of your maximum heart rate, which is determined by age. There are lots of reference charts available online.

The reference charts are ok for a guideline but you might find your target HR is higher/lower. The charts tell me my max is 168 and to stay within 92-142. I worked out my max HR as about 178 and I range between 120-165. I am at work and cannot link the site I used to determine my max HR.
I also had a stress test done last fall and my cardiologist said I could safely go to 175-180 if I wanted.

Stalls are your body's way of telling you not to get too cocky.
5K - 1st 59:00(9/14) PR 33:45(9/15)
10K - 1:14(10/15) 1/2 - 1st 3/20/16
Also, if you are on any medications that lower the heart rate response to exercise (namely beta blockers) those heart rate charts will not work well for you. I usually have my patients go more by how they feel than what their heart rate is. Exercise should feel fairly light to somewhat hard and you should be able to carry on a conversation while exercising (not be so out of breath that you can't)
