Anyone having problems with Orthostatic Hypotension? I do take a beta blocker, but twice today I got up too fast from a lying position and almost passed out. I am 9 days post-op.

I am exactly 7 months post-op today, and experience this on a pretty regular basis.  I've found that if I take a little more time to get up, say from lying down to sitting for a few seconds to standing, it happens less often.  I've also started adding a little more salt to my diet, and drinking fluids that contain electrolytes, which seems to be helping.

I get it real bad sometimes. Drink a cup of broth or two. That usually helps me.

This was happening to me all the time the first few months.  My doctor told me to flex my lower legs several times or pump them a few times like I was pedaling a bike before standing.  It helps to push up the blood that has pooled in your lower extremities.  Worked for me!

That happened to me right around 3 weeks post op and I was taking beta blocker, Toprol. Doctor had to adjust my medication.

I had to have my beta blocker reduced within a week of surgery due to orthostatic hypotension. Talk to your doctor if you continue to have symptoms!

I did as I was losing weight pre-op. The first time, my doc cut my dose of my BP med in half and it resolved. It came back a few months later, and she had me stop the med altogether. I have no issues with it now and my BP stays around 112/67.

Yeah, I had it pretty bad, and passed out a few times. It was mostly gone by a year or so. As others said, drink even more fluids, and add salt to your diet. And most of all, get up slowly and carefully.

Yes I have had / have it too.  I have had High Blood Pressure since I was a child.  Pre op I was taking 3 medications to control it.  Went to the Dr yesterday and I am completely off of 1 of them and only taking 1/2 doses on the other 2.  When getting up from a lying down position, sit up for a bit to balance out.
