Many programs ask that you wait at least a month before adding coffee back into your diet. I actually didn't start drinking coffee again until I was 2.5 years out. Last summer I wanted something with a little kick and real coffee was the answer. Besides, I figured having coffee was a hell of a lot better than going back to cigarettes, which was my first inclination - even though I haven't smoked in years!

Anyway, my program suggests that you avoid caffeine for life, but if you can't to wait until 3 months post op and then limit to two cups of coffee per day.

My surgeon said 4 weeks. My 4th week is Monday and I'm on a countdown. He did say limit all caffeinated beverages for life - no more than 16 oz a day.

I could drink decaf right away.  I now drink 1 cup of regular everyday but no more- just a personal preference.

I had coffee on the first liquid tray in the hospital.  I have only heard of coffee restrictions on these forums.  What was the rationale for no coffee?  It stimulates the gut some but that can be a good thing.  I drink 20 oz every morning, and have from the start.

My doc said the coffee, even decaf was too acidic for the healing stomach. He suggested waiting a month for coffee.

I started drinking coffee again at 4 months post op RNY. I'm now 13 months out. Doing really great losing the weight. However I've got an ulcer from drinking too much coffee 3-8 cups a day

(Be careful it can cause ulcers and dehydration)
