VSG to Gastric Bypass???

I have Barrett's esophagus and the acid since VSG surgery is out of control. I'm taking double the normal dose of the meds plus an additional med just to keep it somewhat under control. My surgeon is concerned if this continues it will further damage my esophagus and has mentioned possibly referring me to convert to gastric bypass. This might not be the right forum to ask this on. I was just curious if anyone else has gone through this and if they were happy they did it?

RNY on 08/21/12

There are two people in my local support group that had the same problem. They both revised to RNY, and the reflux disappeared. They are both ecstatic.

Good luck.

Have to agree with Grim.  I had the lap band for 11 years and was just revised to the gastric bypass the beginning of February and OMG the difference was felt right away.  I ended up with awful heartburn before the band was removed and since the bypass nothing not one single bit of heartburn.

I have to ask did the surgeon that did your sleeve know you had Barrett's Esophagus?

Yes, she knew. She found it when we were doing the pre-op endoscopy. She said I was still ok to have the surgery though. She doesn't even do RNY so if I have to revise I have to go to another surgeon.

I am really surprised she said it was OK as the sleeve tends to make reflux/heartburn worse.  Though it could have been because she doesn't do the bypass.

I would look for a surgeon that does the sleeve to bypass revision.

Try going to the revision & rny forums, you might get more answers there. Hope the rny takes away your problem.

When was your sleeve surgery?  I had an RNY bypass the day after my sleeve surgery, due to a kink (obstruction) in my sleeve.  I was angry at first that things didn't go according to plan, but today I couldn't be happier.  Good luck to you.  xoxo

I had issues with mild reflux pre VSG. When I chose VSG my surgeon forewarned me that if my reflux got out of control I would have to consider a conversion to RNY. It was always an option for me. So far my reflux is easily controlled with a single dose of Protonix each morning.

I know a person *****vised from a lap band to RNY because of horrible reflux issues and she could not be happier. She lost more weight and has no issues with reflux at all.

I can't speak to anything post-op, but I've talked to many people on here who've had much better control of their reflux after RNY, whether it was their original procedure or a revision. I wanted the sleeve myself but was talked into the RNY by my surgeon specifically because of my reflux...I guess we'll see if they're all right!
