problem with protein shakes?

Hello, I'm new, posted once and 2 1/2 weeks out  from my surgery.  This forum has been very helpful!

My question is this: My surgeon told me to start the puree diet and to stop the premier shakes. He only wants me to drink them if there is no other way to get my protein. He feels that people should not be drinking them unless it is for a snack after a hard work out.  I have been using them for years as a meal replacement because I am diabetic ( in remission now though!).  Has anyone else had that advice from their doctor? Thoughts?

thanks!

My surgeon says no liquid calories, but is fine with a protein shake a day.  I'm a year post-op and I still have one for breakfast every day since I don't like trying to fit a solid meal into my mornings due to my exercise schedule.

The internist from my surgeon's office highly recommends drinking a protein shake even now, and I'm 15 months post surgery.

Surgeons are not always the best source of information regarding nutrition.  It eventually gets to a point when you have to decide what works for you.  Protein shakes were my main source of protein, ESPECIALLY after surgery.

My Nurse Practitioner prefers that I get all my protein thru meals and shakes be a backup if I can't all my protein in. After one month I pretty much left shakes in the dust. Occasionally I may 1/2 of a premier protein if I don't get it in during the day. That is rare though.

I'm almost 5 months out and both my dietitian and my surgeon are fine with my drinking protein shakes to meet my protein requirements. I get as much as I can from regular food and supplement with the shakes to hit my targets.

I'm four months out and my dr told me to try and hit goal with foods first and if I can't add protein shakes to help reach it.  I should of listen from day one because I stop reaching goal and couldn't find a good shake that I liked till the ladies on here told me one and I'm in love now lol. So hopefully I can start reaching goal and stop losing my hair.  Good luck with things. And I agree you do what's best for you because you know your body better then anyone else even the drs.

I'm 6 months out and I do a Premier Protein shake every work day. It's just easier for me and gets me a good base of 30g of protein before I even hit the shower. Weekends I get all protein from food and no shakes.

I don't like recommending people don't listen to their doctors, but as someone else said surgeons don't always know about the nutrition side.

Post op my surgeon recommended I eat a bagel for breakfast... Then my nutritionist would come into the room right after him and tell me not to listen to him.

I am like 15 months out and still have a protein shake pretty much daily.  I find it helps, I love it and I get a 20g protein boost first thing in the morning.  It is easy, so I have no excuse at breakfast time when I am racing to work.

Everyones bodies ices are different and you will have to experiment a little on what works best for you.

Good luck!

I am 5 years out and still drink a protein shake every day I have a pretty tight sleeve. If I relied on food to get in all of my protein then I would only be eating meat and eggs all day long!

I'd say eat food if you can, but the body needs fruit and vegetables too, so supplement if you need to. Everybody and every sleeve is different!

My bariatric team encouraged them post-op. It is pretty tough getting your protein in for the first several months out, even with protein shakes. I am over 3 years out and still regularly use them (5-6 per week). One thing for sure, the days that I use them for breakfast my calories are always lower hands-down and I hit my protein target. I can now hit my protein target without them, but appreciate the convenience and ease of taking the burden off the protein target.
