OK folks....time to talk about my biggest fear.  I have read statistics, but I want to know your opinions.  How often to gastric leaks happen?  I had a RNY patient tell me she would never have a sleeve bc of the high risk of leak.  What are your thoughts?

There is NOT a high risk of leak..

does it happen..yes,  but I believe

it's less than 1%..

that being said my friend had a leak

i feel it's because he refused

to do a pre-op diet, and was chugging water

from day 1.. Ad in general was never really on board

about the lifestyle change that must happen.

Oh yea he's fine now..

took a couple months to recover.

ill never understand someone who has surgery to remove

3/4 of their stomach only to not follow the rules..

obesity really is not only a physical but mental thing...

if you are of the personality that you think you know it all

Or know better than your dr and the professionals who are there

to guide you to the safest possible outcome

and are resentful of the limitations that this surgery

offers you, unless you have a total personality shift, youll be your own worst enemy

and you'll struggle..

and blame everyone else for the troubles you brought on yourself..

however, I've been on this forum for quite a while now, and I have to say most people get it.

hes the exception not the rule..

Oh... I will follow the rules.  After a failed surgery, I want a successful one.  I couldn't handle it otherwise.

I'm pretty sure leaks can happen with both surgeries. This is where you need to research and find a good surgeon. My doctor has had no leaks for both surgeries and she also checks for leaks before closing you up after surgery. I had no doubts about my surgeon and felt confident that everything was going to turn out ok. Best decision I could have ever made. I LOVE my new stomach.

Thank you.  The surgeon I'm using is supposed to be one of the very best, but I don't know his stats for leaks.  Can I find that by researching him online, or do I need call his office and ask?

Just ask him.  The surgeons in my group don't even test for leaks any more.  Their track record has been 100% for years.

I think you are going to be just fine.  Good luck!

Sorry but I'd rather be checked for a leak rather than ride on someone else's ego.  Said with love.  I am too nervous for that final answer lol

I'd rather be smart enough to know that leak testing can actually cause bleeding and statistically, if your surgeon has a 100% non leak rate then it is safer not to test.  Said with love... but maybe you are the one with the ego problem!
