OK I am freaking out
I just posted a week ago...but things have not gotten better.
I had my surgery 5 1/2 weeks ago at Mexicali Bariatrics.
I feel I have something stuck in my throat, which makes it hard for me to eat & drink. Last week people suggested that I am eating too fast, too much and taking too big of bites. Well right now I pretty much just drink. What I do eat (refried beans), I am measuring out 2 oz, which I cannot eat everything. I am using a baby spoon now to eat. And I take at least 30 min to eat that amount.
I cannot get my food in, let alone my protein, plus I cannot get 64 oz of liquid in. Everytime I drink I burp, even though I am just sipping.
I contacted my surgeon & they told me to come back to Mexico & they need to see me right away. I do not live remotely close to Mexico. So I contacted my general physican, who will refer me to a specialist.
Please let me know this is normal & I do not have anything to be concerned about. When I was doing the research on this surgery, everyone I knew that had the surgery said it was the best thing they ever did...I just want to be one of those people who say that.
Sounds to me like you already know that it's not normal and that it is definitely something to be concerned about. Especially if your surgeon told you to get seen right away! You don't need us to confirm it for you.
You could have a stricture or you could have super-bad reflux that is making it seem like something is stuck in your throat. And yes, you can have horrible reflux even with liquids. Are you taking a prescription PPI (proton pump inhibitor like Zantac or Pepcid)? If not, you need to get a script called in for that right away. If taking that starts to help then reflux may be a big part of your problem. But you still need to be checked out for more serious issues.

I'm so sorry your recovery is not going smoothly. It makes you feel that the surgery may have been a big mistake. What the others said about reflux is valid. It can feel like there's a blockage in your throat when it's severe. I hope that's all it is, because an increase or change in your meds may be all that's needed to fix the problem.
I'm 5 weeks out myself, and the road to recovery has been very bumpy, indeed. Please keep us up to date on your recovery.

The specialist can do a swallow test to check to make sure all is well. Don't hesitate to follow up. I had a similar problem the first week after my surgery, but it worked itself out. I spoke to my surgeon about it and told him my symptoms. He said if it persisted, he would do the testing. As for you after five weeks, I think it's a good idea to get the testing. My surgeon told me the esophagus is a muscle and it could be out of rhythm. But the doctors can help you, so don't suffer. Follow up right away.
