Hi getting nervous only have two weeks  to go but now I am questioning if I am too old for this surgery.  I need to loose 50 lbs. haven't been able to do it on my own had band removed after 6 years in January because of ulcers and not working.  Do I just live with it??  Scared and depressed not sure what to do...

I think my mom is about 53/54 (i should know that lol!) and she had it done in December  last year. She has RA and other autoimmune problems. So far she has been weaned off her meds and her doctor completely took her off prednisone due to her great blood work and progression. She is doing great and has no regrets. You are not to old. Its common to get nervous and want to back out. But as soon as your on the post op end you will be so grateful you did this.

Hi Grandmasandy,

I had my surgery at 64 years old.  I was very heavy - 385 pounds with a BMI of 60, and I had to lose 50 pounds before the surgery as well.

I did a lot of questioning myself about the decision, but I finally decided that if I did not have the surgery, the excess weight was going to make my life a downward spiral, and it was worth the risk to have health and mobility again.  When I decided to do it, I made the commitment to do it all the way.  If I was going to do something as drastic as cut out more than 3/4 of my stomach, I was darn-well going to be compliant.

The results were amazing.  I lost the 50 pounds in 3 months, had surgery, and 15 months post-op, I was 157 pounds with a BMI of 24.

The surgery is amazing.  I did work hard at it, but I am the same woman who got to 385 pounds.  The surgery didn't make it easy, but it did make it possible.

You can succeed if you make the commitment to the process.

best of luck,

Carol

I can so  totally relate,.  I am 65 years of age and scheduled March 11th, yes just 2 weeks away like you.   I have tossed it back and forth, also concerned because of age.  I thought about the things giving up, uh, let me think, food?  But what else.. hmmm.  hopefully type 2 diabetes and not needing knee replacement on my other knee and not needing to sit so much because my back hurts from standing more than 10 minutes not having to shop in the plus size stores (no matter how good the manequin looks, doesnt look good on me), high blood pressure, sleep apnea, being winded so easily.. I probably could think of a few more but thats a start.  What would I be gaining if I go ahead with the surgery...  hmmm, longer life perhaps, not feeling so yukky about myself, being able to play, really play, with my newest  grandson, being around to perhaps see great grandchildren and play with them too?  Seems to me that it is really a no-brainer.  Yes, VSG is only a tool..  I will have to work harder than our younger counterparts perhaps but then again I feel I have a strong reason.. I want to finally LIVE..  Yep.,.surgery is only 2 weeks away and I can't wait.. Good luck on your journey..Ne strong..Be committed.  and God Bless

I was 66 years old when I got my sleeve on December 29th. It is the best thing I have ever done for myself.  I always considered myself a healthy fat person until both knees had to be replaced 6 years ago.

At that time, I told myself I could start exercising with my new knees and that would take care of my heath.  Well 6 years later and 60 more pounds later, I realized in order to be healthy I needed this surgery!!!

   Age 66... VSG 12/29/14... H.W. 360...  S.W. 323...  C.W. 253
