Insurance excludes gastric surgery- nervous to schedule EGD
So, I will be self pay. At the doctors I was told I will have a EGD. If the EGD shows I have a hiatal hernia, then my vertical sleeve would cost $4,900... If not, then the cost would be $14,900!!!! Why the big gap/difference? I know my insurance would cover EGD and hiatal hernia repair.. Either way, I am actually pretty nervous about the EGD itself so, I have been stalling on scheduling. I had my sleep study on 2/22/15- still unsure of the results on that. I have my cardiac clearance and couseling/nutrition class on 3/16/15. Can anyone give me their EGD positive experience?? Please.. Thanks.
If you need hernia surgery, insurance would pay the hospital bill, anesthesia,, part of the surgeon's bill, etc. You'd only have to pay the difference. If you don't need hernia surgery, you'd have to pay for all of it.

The EGD is not a big deal at all. It takes maybe 10-15 minutes at most and I felt no side effects from it. They say sometimes you have a sore throat but I did not. I wouldn't put off having the EGD. I had the hernia sleeve done and felt no effect from the hernia being fixed whatsoever. It did help with the cost of my surgery so I am thankful for that.

Good luck with your EGD. One thought you could consider is that if you do have a hernia you can get them both done and if you don't have a hernia then you an self pay in Mexico for around $5K or somewhere that is less expensive than your current Dr. You can be assured that you have completed the necessary screenings to self pay.
