hey everyone! I'm having my psychological test this week as part of my insurance requirement for approval. What can I expect?

For me I went in and talked with them for a little while. But nothing extreme, it was really laid back. They just want to know if you understand the surgery , if you have history of eating disorders or depression. Things like that. Then you will go and take a test that is really long but the questions are simple. Some of them are silly like, "Do you like reading mechanic magazines?" Then a simple yes or no. I was told not to over think my answer. If I only do something sometimes or it depends then go with your first gut response. Does that make sense? It was simple just time consuming. No worries! Good luck! :)

The one I took was a multiple choice around 275 questions. The questions were a lot of how does xyz make you feel, do you ever feel this way when this happens, do you hear voices, do you ever have vivid dreams. While it was a lot of questions, I didn't worry about my answers. It was all pretty straight forward.

My psych eval was both easy and strange.. not sure it was the norm

It lasted 40 mins - she had me fill out 3 pages of personal and medical history, gave me 3 words to remember, pointed to various objects in the room and on her person .. asked me to name them (clock, lamp, necklace.. etc), had me count backwards from 100 by 7's (100, 93, 86.. etc) asked me the 3 words and I was done.

Good Luck!

Mine took about 15 minutes.  He asked if I understood what the surgery would do and if I thought I could follow the program, some questions about my chronic controlled depression, then several questions I don't remember.  There was no paperwork or test.

Mine was easy and simple. Just answered some previous history questions about depression and eating disorders. Took about 15 minutes. No written test.

Mine was pretty simple.  He just asked me about what my expectations were for the surgery, support, background with dieting etc.  He asked questions like  what would change with loosing the weight, I think to make sure your not expecting all the problems in the world to miraculously go away.  No written tests.

I don't want to scare you, but just to offer a perspective from someone whose psych test was not easy.  It was actually horrible and I left crying and very discouraged.  I think this was partly b/c I had a bad shrink (no interpersonal skills) giving the exam and partially b/c she pointed out some realities I didn't like and made it 100% clear that she wasn't sure she was going to approve me.

It ended up working out, but it was hard.

It basically was a lot of personal questions, then she told me she wasn't sure I was ready for the surgery.  Between working with my therapist and my therapist speaking with her I was able to get approved.  This was really frustrating for me, but in the end I think it was a good thing.  It made me look at the issue beyond just the surgery and the food and commit to additional support (support groups, OA, therapy).

I hope your session goes well & your psychiatrist is great!

Wow! Thanks for the input. Everyone else's seemed to be a breeze, "in and out in about 15 minutes." I know for sure mine is 2 hours. One hour of multiple choice questions and one hour with the psychologist. I have no idea what to expect but I'm really glad you gave an honest and different spin on this from what else I've read out there.

Mine was verbal and awkward. He asked question to try and determine my perception of food and this surgery. He wanted to make sure I did not have unrealistic expectations. He also asked me if I knew what day it was and where I was at and why I was there. Haha!
