tell me about the hair loss
I know its normal to lose some hair post surgery. I've been told it's similar to like after you give birth, just like a change your body has to adjust to and then it gets better? I've also been told to take biotin if it starts getting bad. I have a ton of hair and it's actually one of the few things I like about my appearance, so any suggestions on things that can help with that? And does it just kinda stop falling out at a certain point when your body adjusts or what?
There is nothing you can do to prevent it. Hair loss starts at about three months, for most people it resolves around 8 months. Yes it is temporary and will grow back - the biotin will help for when it does cone back but it won't prevent or make the phase shorter. The hair loss is a result of the anesthesia. Soooo you rock a short hair cut for a few months. Mine is coming out pretty good now and I'm 3 months. You can't tell by looking at my head but you can by looking at my brush.
Totally nothing you can do to prevent it, but do make sure that you're getting in your protein. Biotin will help it grow back nicely, but nothing will help with the actual loss.
But, in good news, by the time your hair starts falling out there will be other things that you live about your appearance. So that's sort of cool :D
(I shaved my head to raise money for St. Baldricks when I was 6 weeks post-op. Figured it was a great time to do something I'd always wanted to do but had never been brave enough for. Since then, I've kept my hair short.)

I have very thick, curly hair. I started losing it at around three months. I lost about half my hair. The only person who even noticed was me. It was very strange trying to style it. It started growing back at about 6 months and was back, thick as ever, by one year out. I wear my hair short. I think that's why nobody noticed the hair loss. Many get a new hair cut when the loss starts. A new do always makes you feel better!
I got a cute short haircut and really, no one can tell. I'm not a fan of the hair loss, though. I thought it was finally letting up and this morning I was just pulling huge handfuls out of it in the shower (I hadn't washed my hair in a few days which may account for that, but still). I accidentally ran my hands through my hair in a work meeting and was grossed out to realize I had a handful of hair!
Anyway, nothing you can do about it, but we're here (or at least, I'm here!) to commiserate if it happens to you.
I've never been one who worried about how my hair looks. It was always straight and thick. At about 4 months, however, handfuls began coming out in the shower and after about 3 weeks of this I cried, just a little. I'm now 8 months out and the hair loss has just begun to slow down. My hair is quite thin now but new hair growth is evident, and I look a little like a porcupine. I'm planning to get it cut short during spring break but just wear it up every day for now. On the upside, I've lost 78 pounds and feel great!
Mine started falling out last month and I'll be 4 months post op Feb. 24. I cut my hair into a bob and I can barely notice since I chopped it. I only really notice it when I comb my hair when its wet! I get a decent amount in my comb then.

My surgery is in 2 weeks (holy cow...), and I'm a little nervous about this too. I already have fine, thin hair-- but it's curly, so I can fool people. ;) 4 months after my youngest daughter was born via C Section, I experienced pretty significant hair loss--so I can relate to that. I actually saw my dr about it, because I thought maybe I had some hormone issues.
He put me on high doses of vitamin D, because mine was pretty low... and within about 2 weeks, the hair loss stopped. I've always wondered if it was the vitamin D, or just a coincidence of timing?
Still...I have to admit... if and when this issue pops up again, you can bet I'll take the vitamin D again. LOL I hope it's not any worse this time around. I can handle that much hair loss again...but good grief, I can't take much more than that! :) :)
I am one of the fortunate few that never lost any hair. I didn't loose any after my 3 kids and I am 6 months post op and haven't lost any hair yet. Every time I go to my hair dresser I keep asking "am i ok?" since I have been so paranoid about when it will happen.
I haven't done anything special but I have really focused on my protein. I also take "greens" since I can't eat as many veggies as I would like.
I think that some people are simply more predisposed that others.
Good luck to you.
