Question about shakes and Protein

I am having surgery on Wednesday and will be going to the store today to pick up my protein powders and vitamins. I do have a question about shakes though. I know that when I start the full liquid diet I will be on shakes too. Does that mean I will be able to doctor the shakes up some at that point? Like can I add PB2 to the protein shakes and some fruit? Or anything really, healthy of course. I know it is going to be hard to get everything in nutritionally speaking at this point, but I would like to try and do as well as possible. Right now on my pre op I have only been allowed to mix my shakes in water. Which is actually pretty good but I won't be using this brand afterwards, way too much!

Also I am planning on picking up some unflavored protein as well to mix into soups and jello since those will be allowed. Does anyone have any tips to getting all my protein in aside from those? I am excited and nervous!! So I am trying to get things made in advance to make it easier. I may have also bought a Ninja Complete Kitchen that I am dying to use!!

Every plan is different so check with your surgeon's team for specific instructions. I can tell you I was not allowed any fruit in either the full liquid stage or the puree stage. Fruit is basically a system for conveying sugar into your body. In my program we focused on getting protein in and avoiding sugar and carbs, so fruit was out in those first weeks after surgery.

PB2 and even a small amount of no sugar added peanut butter were allowed though. Those are nutritionally valuable and relatively low carb.

If you want to add some fruit flavors to your shakes, try Torani SF syrups. They come in all sorts of sugar free flavors. Stevia Sweet Drops are also good for that.

I used the Unjury Chicken Soup protein right after surgery -- it was a nice change from the sweet shakes. If you are planning to mix protein powder with anything hot, you may want to get a digital food thermometer if you don't have one.

Good luck to you!

Thank you! I was almost positive that fruit wasn't allowed at this stage. And like you said it does make sense.  I managed to pick up some PB2 today so hopefully it taste good!

I got some unflavored Isopure as well and the man said that it should dissolve fine in hot liquids but I will be sure to get a food thermometer just in case.

I am getting nervous and excited the closer it gets here!!

I would avoid adding fruits to your shakes while you're on the liquid phase.  They're empty carbs.

I bought Premier Protein RTD shakes in chocolate and vanilla.  I also bought several flavors of sugar free pudding mix, PB2 and Torani sugar free syrups.  I found recipes online and in a WLS book to create different flavored shakes.  Add one tablespoon of the pudding mix to your shake, blend it in your Ninja with a couple of ice cubes and it helps to change up the flavors.  I loved banana cream and chocolate, or pistachio and vanilla.

Here's a link to the book I bought on shake varieties

After surgery when I could eat yogurt, I added unflavored protein powder to the yogurt to increase the amount of protein.

Oh I did pick up some sf pudding but I didn't even think about putting in the shake! That is a great idea!! Thank you for the link I will check it out! So far i have just looked on Pinterest for ideas. They have a lot of sleeve recipes, but a lot are for the further stages.

Are the Torani sf syrups in stores or just online? I also picked up yogurt too. I have never been a fan of the texture but am going to give it a try maybe I will like it this time. Heck after not eating really anything for the past 10 days then plus the days until I am cleared for it I have a feeling I will be giving everything that was healthy that I didn't like a shot when they can be added. These are of course the things okayed by my Dr :)

I actually found a milk today that has 19g of protein. it called Fair Life. My store has never carried it before. Anyways it is low carb too so I picked up a small thing of it along with my skim milk.

You can find a limited selection of the Torani syrups at some stores. I know they are at World Market and I think Costco. My local Kroger carries them, but only 3 or 4 flavors. You definitely get a better selection online.
