IBS? veggie irritation? (TMI)
So my stomach seems to be rebelling to my love of vegetables. It has been very upset the past several days and seem to react mostly to fiberous things -- beans, brussel sprouts, bok choy -- all the good (low call) stuff.
My sister has had these issues a lot and she told me I should start eating more rice, pasta and bread. NOT what I wanted to hear.
I could focus more on protein and increase those portions, but I definitely use veggies to fill me up without all the calories.
Has anyone else had something like this pop up out of the blue? What worked for you?
oh -- also it is my time of the month, so maybe that is part of the problem?
My experience with IBS is that it's often a diagnosis given when doctors don't know what the heck is going on. For example - I had fructose malabsorption, not IBS. But I had to figure that out on my own since my doctors were clueless.
I think you should read up on FODMAPs - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FODMAP. From what you've said, it seems like you might benefit from a low FODMAP diet, which definitely doesn't involve the grains your sister suggested!
You might also consider seeing a GI doc. Have you talked with your surgeon? That might also be useful!

Sorry Stacy. I haven't had it. But you can find out pretty easily if it's the veggies. Just do a couple of days of dense protein, and see how you feel. You might find that it keeps you full longer than veggies too.
I prescribe steak and chicken for two or three days. You can certainly stay within your regular calorie goals. And it's a heckuva lot better option than rice, pasta and bread.

That has happened to me a few times in the past. I just power through it and notice it goes away, I just think I get a weird bug or something and the fiber doesn't help but I refuse to go without the veggies. I would starve

I know. It isn't lovely. But it's something to think about. While Brussels on this list are "safe" the serving is 2 sprouts. I know that I certainly eat way more than 2 sprouts in a serving. :)
I'm currently doing an AIP elimination. It's way worse. But my gut hates me and I need to put on my big girl pants and figure out what is causing it. It's also possible that some FODMAPs need to go too and I'll just be left to eat bacon.
