Drink your water and I really mean it

Ok, I am approaching 5 years and am still at goal. You would think I know what I am doing. But a few days ago I was chatting on the phone for several hours and drinking wine (my birthday) while hubbie was at choir. didn't get a lot of water in and alcohol is dehydrating.  Well when hubbie got home I got up and was talking to him. I don't remember it but he said i went blank, slumped against a door, slid to the floor and blacked out. He said afterwards I was confused to he hauled me to the hospital. They gave me saline via IV which I don't remember but after that I perked up and was oriented.  They admitted me and did a bunch of tests on my brain and heart. All came out normal so after two nights there I came. home..   I am convinced it was dehydration.    Don't do this. It can happen even after you are years out.  Learned my lesson.  Drinking water is my new hobby.   Diane

How scary, Diane!  I'm glad that it wasn't something more serious and that you're home safe and sound now.   Good cautionary tale for all of us

Wow.  I'm glad you are ok.  Thanks for posting this.  Its an important lesson.

And congratulations for making it 5 years without regaining.  That is excellent.  As someone just starting maintenance, I'd love to hear your strategy.

best wishes,

Carol

I'm glad you are doing ok. I have learned that when I did little water I always felt like fainting when I got up. I love water so it's not a problem but sometimes you have other things on your mind and you forget. Today there was no A/C at work, it was so harsh for me since dehydration is always a problem in that case. I drank extra water but it still sucked.

Keep up the water intake, it's our BFF!!!

The only way alcohol causes dehydration is through excessive urination. Were you sitting on the toilet while chatting on the phone? The simplest explanation for what happened was you had too much to drink and passed out drunk. Alcohol goes in and out of your bloodstream much faster now. There have been a million cautionary tales about drinking after WLS. It sounds like excess wine was the culprit, not too little water.

I'm glad you're feeling better.

Having read Grim's comment, I did some reasearch. Seems you are spot on, Grim! I "knew" alcohol dehydrates us but hadn't realised the physiological processes. Everything I found makes the same point; alcohol causes more urine to form and it is the secretion of that urine which causes dehydration.

Highest 290, Banded - 248   Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,
