1week out..feel like a made a 20k mistake
This is completely normal I am quite sure most of us felt that way the 1st couple weeks. You now have to deal with some major changes physically and mentally. It's a bit overwhelming. Having major surgery alone, will lay you out for a bit. But I can assure you, it will pass and it will get easier! Hang in there! Those regrets will be long gone before you know it!
This was about the time where I was ready to cry but I was too weak to muster any tears. And my stomach hurt so I didn't want to move it with any shudders from crying. I came on this site and just kept reading that it will pass. You can get through it. Take it one day at a time. Lo and behold, 7 weeks out and I'm still alive! It does get better. Try different shakes, soups and liquids. I had Vitamin Water 0, Sugar free apple juice from the hospital. I tried different temperatures of liquids to find which one worked better for me. I even started walking while I drank. The walking helped the liquids go down faster.
My doctor told me it can take 3 weeks to 3 months for your stomach to heal. Cut yourself some slack! Not everyone comes out of surgery hitting their protein and liquid goals. We have to work to it. I will suggest you put the water/liquid goal first. Just try different things until you find something that works for you.
First 4 weeks are an adjustment. It does get better. Until your tummy heals, try sleeping on a recliner or with lots of pillows under you. You will soon be able to sleep on your sides or stomach. The first 20 maybe you aren't excited...but the next 20, and 20, and 20 and so on....you will be excited for!
I could not get the protein in either the first few weeks. Your body is learning how to eat and digest food again. Make sure you take naps where you can. Push yourself to get up and go for a little walk. This will help build stamina and strength, and definitely help your mental state. The most important thing right now is for you to stay hydrated. Get sugar free jell-o or ice pops..it helps break up the routine. Keep a cup of water with you at all times...no straws right now. If your lips are really dry and cracking as well - call the surgeon immediately. Definitely signs of dehydration. If you are feeling that lethargic, definitely call the surgeon now as well.
Keep your chin up. Take every day as it comes. It does get better with time and practice. Everything becomes a new way of living vs. a diet.
It will get better. Give your body some time to heal. Before you know it, all this will be in the distant past and you will be enjoying your success. Hang in there! You are only about a week out. Try to get in as much liquids as you can. I could not get all my protein in for at least 2 weeks. I slept on recliner for a few nights. Try that. Hang in there! It gets easier!
