How many of you.....?
I had RNY 9 years ago. I really wish the sleeve procedure had been available then. Don't get me wrong, I am happy with my weight loss of 115 pounds and have been able to keep it off. However, I have a lot of stomach upset and am severally Vitamin D deficient. My sister recently had the sleeve and she has lost 90 pounds in two months. She has also had no problems like I had. My prep and recovery for the surgery was no way near as easy as her sleeve procedure. I have another sister who is having the sleeve done next month.
I am 2 years out and don't regret my sleeve at all. I know way to many people who had RNY who ended up with complications or regain. I think the regain issues happen because the intestines adjust and the mal-absorbtion of calories goes away. The pouch is also created with the stretchy part of the stomach, with the sleeve, most of that is removed.
Don't get me wrong, regain can happen with a sleeve too. You must be committed to a lifestyle change, but it is so worth it.
I have absolutely never wished I'd had RNY.
And seriously, don't let anyone kid you that you might regain more w/ sleeve than RNY. Regain depends upon failure to stay on plan, period. If you stay on your plan, no matter which procedure you choose, you will lose the weight and keep it off. If you play around w/ off-plan meals and foods then regain is not only possible, it's likely.
I wish there was a study about reasons behind people's choices and their ability to maintain weight loss long term. I hear so many people say, "I had RNY because I 'need' the negative reinforcement of dumping." Well, once that's gone, seems to me like if you haven't learned to make these choices for yourself, without the negative reinforcement, then what are you left with? Same w/ "needing" malabsorption. Neither of these "benefits" of RNY is permanent...so what happens when the crutches are gone and you have to walk alone?
I committed to WLS and knew that the small capacity of the sleeve was what I needed while I learned proper nutrition, food choices, portion sizes, logging foods, exercise habits, etc. It's been 8 months and I HAVE learned these things. I'm not saying I'll never regain. I have no crystal ball and absolutely no one plans for it. But I am saying that I have learned what I need to know to maintain. Now it's all up to me but I'm stronger for these lessons and fully expect to continue on this path in perpetuity.
