Hello I read your reply and I am so jealous and curious. I had my duodenal switch surgery 6-13-14 just a few weeks after you and I still can hardly eat anything. Nothing tastes good eating or drinking including protein shakes. Everything tastes horrible.......sometimes i can force a few bites or part of a shake, but some days not even that. Im five weeks out and not getting better. I struggle with nausea too. how long did it take you?
Luckily, I haven't had any issues. Some flavors are different - I use less crystal light. I assume after eating shakes, eggs, and chicken that it tastes to sweet for my pallet. Yet after drinking crystal light, my next glass or two of water tastes like minerals (never noticed that preop).
I'd describe it as an awaking of my taste buds. After years of drowning them in salt and fat, I'm relearning to taste food as it's supposed to taste. I just ate my shrimp and that was the 5th serving over the last 3 days. The first serving was amazing - taste/texture/flavors. This last serving I just finished - I was already tired of the flavor and was eating for nutrition vs getting any enjoyment from the taste.
I tried the GNC isopure vanilla protein powder and a sample pack of 10 or so syntax protein flavors and had to use very cold water and ice cubes to make them tolerable. I use cytosport vanilla powder from costco (made by muscle milk or vice verse). Having a shake I like helps. They are better cold but I don't mind warm. I use water, milk was okay but a little sweet, almond milk was like a milkshake but adds calories and carbs. Preop I added benefiber to my shake and it tasted like on orange creamsicle.
I'd say this far out it's definitely worth talking to your dr or a nut/psych. If it's a stricture, that might be sending signals to your body telling you not to eat. I've heard of patients worried about regain/old habits/never losing/hurting your new stomach/etc... that form a mental block to eating that a nut or counselor might help you with.
Post op, I was worried about not being able to eat (and drink). I had no worries about hurting my sleeve. As soon as my dr allowed, I was trying different foods, or should I say proteins. Thankfully, my stomach has enjoyed everything I've tried.
Nausea can also cause a reaction that would make your body want to reject food out of fear for more nausea or heartburn. I've read many posts that nausea and eating issues (and hunger) can be related to acid reflux.
On the bright side, it's probably easier to lose weight and I have yet to meet/read someone who didn't regain their taste and enjoyment of eating.
Talk to your dr!
I saw him last week and mentioned it and he didn't seem concerned. He said keep trying and eat anyway even if it tastes like craps. I try except when the bad nausea hits then I refuse to force myself.....I won't make myself sick. I am so envious.......it's not that I can't eat it's that everything tastes so bad that I have a hard time forcing it down. Sounds like you are doing great good luck!
