Pre op Diet Question? Anyone do 2 week liquid even if not required?
I am having my surgery on June 4th. So excited and nervous too. I wanted to know if anyone has done a two week liquid diet even if you surgeon did not require it. I was supposed to do low carb for the whole six months and that is what he feels is good enough to shrink the liver. Then do 2 day clear liquid before surgery. I have been doing really good but have had a few items that are not on the diet so I just want to make sure my liver shrinks. I am sure it could'nt hurt but just want to make sure that it is a good idea. I have been doing it two days now and its not that bad. I also wonder if maybe not doing it is better to keep strength up for surgery. I started at 275 and am now at 257 since starting the 6 month diet.
I wouldn't have started a total liquid diet sooner than I needed to, but I did start swapping out breakfast and lunch most days for shakes for the two months or so prior to surgery. I'm glad that I did since it made me a lot more aware of my eating habits, but I think going to all shakes earlier would have made fatigue set in earlier.
Not to mention keeping dinner as real food let me keep cooking for my family!

I did that. My surgeon does not require it for lightweights, but it helped me get my head in the game, I lost 15 pounds in two weeks and my surgery was just fine, no complications, and no issues. I don't mean that the liquid diet is the reason there were no complications, but when I asked my doctor, he smiled and said, "It didn't hurt". :)
Any weight that you can lose prior to surgery will only benefit you.
My surgeon required four weeks of the preop diet. I was crazy paranoid afraid that my liver wouldn't shrink enough and he wouldn't perform the VSG. So I started my preop diet six weeks prior to surgery and lost 27 pounds. I'm a heavyweight so it helped me, both physically and mentally, to be prepared for the dietary changes to come.
Good luck on your journey!

I happen to agree with your surgeon and am glad to see one that realizes this. It depends on the liquid being consumed also. I was on Atkins and keeping my carbs < zero prior to by lap band. When the put me on liquids two weeks prior I started gaining a pound a day. The shakes while "low carb" where way higher than what I had been eating and I blew up. They made me stay on it.
When I was sleeved they put me back on the liquid diet (even though some staff had gone to convention where they learned it isn't what has to be done.) I stayed on the high protein low carb diet and made sure to have my dh ask the surgeon about the liver. He told my DH that my liver was nice, tight and small and that the "liquid diet" did it's job. I would follow your surgeons advice.
