No robe, slippers at the hospital?
on 5/3/14 2:50 am
I, too had a jumbo gown so never used the robe I took. Plus had the IV. I bought slip on shoes from Walmart and wore those to the hospital and for walking the halls. Easy on, easy off. I found socks too binding, they annoyed me. Wore a loose dress there and home and it was awesome.
Used my phone for messaging/surfing, didn't read one bit, barely watched TV. Slept lots.
My suggestions: phone, charger, lip balm, face wipes, toothbrush/toothpaste, pillow and a comb. I didn't get to shower until home anway. Oh, and a change of underwear, too.
Best wishes!
I just wore the slipper socks. I did bring a loose robe, but it did pinch the IV tubing sometimes. A backwards patient gown does the trick. I was in the hospital for 6 days last year, and I brought the same robe, as well as a pair of Crocs. If they told you not to bring stuff, it is likely because they are prepared for you. :)
Thank you all for your input. I think I will bring the robe and slippers just in case but won't overpack on the other things.
Can I just change the subject and say that I am starving?! Totally not complaining because I only have a three day liquid diet, but I know many of you had several weeks. I feel weak and tired and hungry and I can't focus. I have so much to do and all I want to do is lay down.
anyways, thanks so much!!!! Renee

Slipper socks supplied by the hospital did just fine for me. Ditto hospital gowns. I wore one the traditional way and then tied another one on backwards like a cape to cover the rear view whenever I got up to walk or whatever. As I commented in your hospital stay thread, I was VERY happy I took the nurse's advice and stayed in hospital gowns because they ended up stained with blood rather than my own clothing.
I was so exhausted and in so much pain and just so overwhelmed (my VSG also happened to be my first major surgery ever) that I never touched my cell phone, nor did I touch the magazines and other entertainment stuff I lugged along to the hospital. I definitely was NOT bored during my overnight stay.
We were told not to bring slippers as well...fall risk after surgery while hooked up to the IV. They gave us multiple pairs of "gripper socks" to wear instead.

All I needed was my phone and charger. I wore comfy, baggy clothes to the hospital, wore the same clothes home.
Most hospitals no longer allow you to bring in pillows, due to risk of bedbugs, but you can have a pillow in the car for the ride home.
I would not bring any of my own clothes to the hospital, because of the risk of blood leaking and ruining something. Hospital robes and gowns are designed to be used with the machines that they will be hooking you up to. I had two pairs of gripper socks and wore one pair in bed and the other for walking.
A phone and charger are pretty essential for me.

I went out and bought the cutest nightgown, robe and slippers for my hospital stay and used none of them. I stayed 2 nights and due to the IV's I wasn't able to put my own things on so I kept on the hospital gown which covered everything. The hospital gave me the slipper socks with grippers and I just used them. As far as my phone, I didn't want to even look at it. I did wear a cute lounging set home from the hospital and I had my own pillow in the car to keep over my stomach, under the seat belt.
Hi Renee :-)
I brought a robe and slippers for the same reasons you indicated - and I'm glad that I did! Also, once some gas is passed which is required before you leave the hospital to ensure that everything is working properly... I didn't realize that it wasn't just gas that passed until a day after the fact! Thank God I had a robe to cover what would have been a huge embarrassment walking the halls!
I kept my phone on vibrate mode and the nurse was always kind enough to plug it in overnight for me. I used my phone constantly, LOL!
I can't wait to hear back from you after tomorrow. I'll be thinking about you and wish you all the best! I had my surgery on May 1. Good luck girl!
