So i  had surgery yesterday and it went well but no matter what i do there is a horrible pain in my chest that goes around to my back. It feels like gas but prevents me from sipping since everything hurts once it goes down. Did that happen to any of you?

Very possibly gas, but never mess around with chest pains. Give your surgeon a ring in the morning.

It happens to me for 3 days. I had to walk a lot.

I had that. Walking, hot showers and a heating pad helped it pass!

I had that. Hot herbal tea did wonders!

Very likely gas from what they pump your abdomen full of in order to see your stomach during surgery.  Walking is the best remedy - it'll help the gas absorb into your tissues faster.  Lots of people say that the pain tends to migrate up towards their shoulder over the first couple of days.  A heating pad feels good too.

Get lots of rest, make sure to keep sipping, and walk as much as you can - if you're like most of us, you'll feel remarkably better in another few days!

YES, YES it happened to me also, back pain and chest pain. The best thing for it, is to walk and sip slowly, it will get better in a few days. 8 days post-op and I can drink with no pains. Hang in there you'll be fine.

PS: Warm broth works better for me, you may want to try some.

Thanks guys. I had the nurse call the doc for some other meds and he ordered me an Upper GI in the morning so we'll see what it shows. Somehow I just know it's gas because it constantly moves around. I keep walking a lot I've circled the floor 8 times already today. I guess I'll just keep at it until it goes away.

I had that same feeling.  I walked a lot and my husband and my mother took turns rubbing my back and it was almost as if they were burping me.  I don't think I sipped anything for three days after the surgery for me that pain was the worst part.

When I had the "gas" from the surgery, it felt like I had to burp but of course you can't burp it out. And it rumbled around in my chest and back and caused some discomfort. It went away pretty quick, though. I tried to stand up, change positions, and move around as much as possible - not just walking, but changing positions: sitting, leaning, standing, bending over. That seemed to help the most. And of course, I drank plenty of hot tea.
