Upper GI B/4 Surgery???
My surgery is 2 weeks out and my doctor just told me I needed to do an upper GI to make sure I don't have a hernia. Did anyone else have to do this before the Sleeve Surgery? The clinic acts like it's no big deal but I will be on day 2 full liquid diet and I won't be able to eat anything before my 11:30 am appt... The nurse giggled and said "this is what it will be like for surgery"! My surgery is at 8:00am and I don't have to work 3 hours before it... Ugh!
That's pretty common for what I understand. I had to do a barium test and was really surprised that I didn't have an endoscopy... Ironic because now I'm having reflux and have to have one tomorrow.

An upper GI was suggested but not required by my surgeon. I almost didn't get it because of the extra cost but now I'm glad I did. It turns out I do have a small hernia that my surgeon will fix while he's in there. I wasn't yet on the liquid diet before my upper GI. I just had to do the no food or drink after midnight thing. My surgery is scheduled for December 4th and I started my two week liquid diet on Thursday.
Good luck with everything!
my surgeon requires and endoscope for all patients , that requires clear liquids only after midnight , but my pcp wanted me to have a colonoscopy (I never had one and it was time) so I ask them to do both at the same time , and that requires a laxative prep the day before and only clear liquids for 24 hours
the test is nothing the prep is a pain in the butte
I am three weeks post op. I was a revision from band to sleeve so yes I had an upper GI pre surgery. The test did not show the hiatal hernia that was there but did show the band slippage. Every surgeon has there reasons for ordering tests and everyone is different. The upper GI is one of the easiest tests to do going through this whole process.
