Husband and children
At my hospital they had an extra sleeper bed thing for a guest to stay overnight if you wanted them to. Children were allowed but I would beg you to leave yours at home if they are screaming rambunctious toddlers. I had a patient down the hall from me who had his children brought in every day and they spent way too long running up and down the hallways, yelling, etc. They collided with one patient who was out walking and ripped her IV line out of her arm. But I saw other children going in to visit people and they were all great, very quiet and well-behaved and no one had a problem with them.
My husband was allowed to stay with me if he wanted because my room was private and had a foldout loveseat that could be converted to a bed. The hospital I was at had all private rooms and 24 hour visitation. He ended up going home though, and came back the next day.
I'm sure kids would be allowed, but we don't have any so I'm just guessing.

My husband and I decided that he would drop me off at the hospital, then go back home and stay with the kids. I have a homeschooled teen and a 7yo special-ed kid who had a half-day that day, and they were both worried about me. Besides which, I had all sorts of nursing staff to look after me.
He and the kids visited me that night and then brought me home the next day, which happened to be Thanksgiving.
I guess it would depend on how your doing after surgery. I had planned to stay with hubby, but he was doing so well and had excellent nurses working with him, so I came home at night. He is planning on staying with me for my surgery, but only if I need him too. We made arrangements in advance so that his niece and nephew could stay at our home and take care of our fur babies just in case I stayed with him.
The day of surgery my kids stayed home with Grandpa. He took them to Mc Donalds and watched movies with them. So much easier for them than sitting still at the hospital. Depends on how old your are. Mine are 6, 8, 11. They did however come with my husband on my last day and hung out in my room until I was released. I think that hour was pretty boring for them but they got to see where Mommy had been for 3 days.
I hope that helps you.......
My husband stayed in the waiting room the whole surgery and was in my room waiting for me when they wheeled me in. He left shortly after that though to take a nap at home and then was back that night. My son (17 months at the time) came to visit that night with my Aunt and cousin. I met them in the waiting room and stayed there with them for a while. My son didn't come back again and my husband didn't spend much time there the next day since he came down with strep throat and was barely there to pick me up the 3rd morning.
