Rotisserie Chicken Wings

I've seen these a couple of places, and had a couple this evening for dinner (I accidentally worked too long to get home for dinner before my next appointment and was trolling the grocery store for something quick!).

Fresh Market had decent sized wings, and it was pretty easy to peel the skin off.  They use organic birds and the wings were really quite tasty!

LOL -- who would have thought a couple of chicken wings with most of the skin peeled off would have ever been my entire dinner!

I checked them out and it seems that two wings are 180 calories, with 12 grams of fat.  That means that 120 calories are from fat leaving only sixty from protein.  That would not work for me in the weight loss phase, but your program might be different.

She peeled the skin off though, taking care of some of that fat.....right?

Some, but chicken wings are by far the very fattest part of the chicken.  The fat is layered throughout the meat.  Your fingers will be drenched in it even if you wash them after you peel the skin off.  Look, I love wings too, much tastier than chicken breast.  :) But.... I would not eat them during weight loss, you may disagree.  My aim during that short time (weight loss period) was to maximize protein while keeping calories (carbs and fat) as low as possible.  I would eat things like fish, shrimp, chicken and turkey breast, pork loin and beef sirloin or filet.  Again, that was my strategy, yours might be different.

Not to pick nits (and your conclusion probably would be the same), but actually only 108 calories are from fat, leaving 72 from protein.  Which equals 18g protein.

You are totally correct and actually you caught me in one of my "mind games" that I play with myself.  I round fat calories up to ten, partly because it's easier to count by tens and partly because I almost always undercount my fat grams.  I love a little fat.  :)  In the same way, I undercount my protein grams.  I am supposed to get at least 82 grams of protein a day, but I round everything down when I count protein and if I go back and re-count, I am usually closer to 90 by the end of the day.  I have been doing for so long now that I forget to adjust for posting.  I started doing this when I read a study showing that we undercount our calories and fat and over-count our carbs by up to 50%.  This is just my little way of trying to even out the playing field.  You are totally correct about the numbers.

Thanks for the discussion.  I think a lot of the problem with wings (and sometimes the numbers for "drumettes" or other part (what do you call those?) aren't clearly differentiated.  I can peel all the skin off a drumette, but not so much from that other part -- so I avoid those, since I can't get the skin off.

But the drumette skin is flabby and gross (hmm, I suddenly feel a kinship with it!), so there's no temptation to eat the skin, like there is when there's a nice crispy piece of skin.

I agree, wings are not the "best" choice under any cir****tance.  But all rotisserie birds (breast too) are cooked in a way that is very juicy -- so you are correct that it is important to know if that "juice" is fat, moisture from the chicken, or some gloppy stuff that has been injected into the bird (like a rotisserie chicken from Sam's club -- if you eat a "natural" chicken and one of those, you'll taste sugar, etc. right away!).

The only reliable thing to do is make your own, when you know what's in it!  Running late with nothing available is never your best choice!

PS -- I did weigh this AM (3 days ahead of my usual Saturday time) and was the same weight as last week.  So no gain (yet) from the weekend, but no loss (which was expected).

Thanks for helping keep us on track!

I hope you never read anything I say as judgment, because it is not the way I mean it.  I share my thoughts and answer your posts the same way I would if I was looking in a mirror and having a conversation with myself.  Almost always my comments are mostly aimed at me.  :)

I am glad there is no weight gain and I totally get needing to have some "go to foods" that are easy to get.  I love wings too, but I remember my nutritionist telling me that they are the 'worst" part of the chicken for me because of the fat.

Thanks - I never read "judgement" in your responses.  What I read is your voice of experience trying to save me from myself! LOL!  Your advice has always been right on, and in fact, I'd say I would have have been as successful as I have been to date without.

My specific actions may not always reflect what I consider to be the "optimal" decision, but they are informed decisions.  I can't pretend like I didn't understand the potential consequences of my actions, before making my choice --  dealing with the consequences (which for right now, have been very, very strict eating since I returned).

I am within 2 pounds of lowest weight I have ever been as an adult, and about 15 pounds less than when I got married 30 years ago.  And frankly, it's a weird time!  So I appreciate your insights, and that you continue to share them!
