Need some ideas..
Help I need a new game plan.
You see I'm driving out of town today to pick my daughter up from the airport 3 hours away. I feel like my whole eating plan is upside down whenever I'm away from home. I know a lot of you travel and still manage to eat healthy and according to plan while your on the go. So how do you do it? Like I said, I'll be driving a lot today, then spend a couple of hours in an airport, then more driving. Last weekend was the same scenario and I took a cheese stick, some turkey jerky and water, then for dinner we stopped at In and Out and I had a protein style hamburger. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Barbara
Good morning, I stick to the cheese stick and usually will get a whey protein shake for my meals. I drive school bus so it is really so much easier than trying to count protein grams and stuff. Then in between i use crystal lite as my water. ( i gag on water). I don't know what stage you are in as far as post or pre op. I am assuming you are back on Regular foods. But that is what i do. Hope it helps. I also get some fruit for my two snacks if the cheese stick is not part of the feeling i want.
Taking water, cheese sticks and turkey jerky is good. You're far enough out that you can probably eat almost anything. I do travel a lot and I rarely find myself without something to have for a meal.
I travel with individual packets of protein powder with my shaker bottle so that all I have to do is add water and there's a protein shake for a meal. I'm not a big fan of protein bars, but I do carry a few Chocolite Protein Bars with me for a change of pace. It's not that there's anything wrong with protein bars -- I'm just afraid of the slippery slope that some of them can lead to. Another thing I always have, either in my carry-on, purse, or car is a selection of nuts. I buy them in bulk and then use snack size zip plastic bags to portion out an appropriate amount. If you have a good cooler, Greek yogurt is another option. You can get some Oscar Mayer Deli Fresh chicken breast or turkey breast luncheon meats, too. I think 8 slices of the turkey breast is about 50 calories and 9 grams of protein -- the chicken breast is about 60 calories for 6 slices with 10 grams of protein. The carbs are 2 grams for both, I think. A portion of the lunch meat and a reduced fat cheese stick or two and you have another meal. For crunch, baby carrots are great as are pepper strips from various colors of bell peppers. I prefer red, but orange and yellow are YUM, too! If you need a dip, use some Greek yogurt flavored with some garlic and/or onion powder.
I'm sure you'll get a lot more responses with lots of other ideas.
Try not to let being away from home get to you. You have to live your life with a sleeve and that means getting out and still being able to stay on plan.
Something else to remember: being hungry is not an emergency! But that doesn't apply to thirst. Keep hydrated.......its very easy to forget to drink while traveling.
Hope this helps a little.......................and good luck!!!

I bring a softside lunchbox with me. I pack an ice pack, yogurt, cheese sticks, water, a RTD protien drink and/or whatever else floats my boat that day. If you're driving, try the lunchbox.

Yes... I was just thinking of taking my lunch bag with me since that is my norm Monday-Friday. Why should it be different for the weekend since I'm leaving the house. Last weekend when I went out of town, I was afraid to take a protein shake or anything else that might spoil un-refrigerated, I didn't think of my lunch bag or a small ice chest.
Thank you ladies for your input!
I'm super excited that my little girl is coming home today. She's been away for 2 weeks, and I've missed her so.
Enjoy your weekend!
