A WTF kind of side effect of VSG

I met with the GI doc today  - now, he was HOT as hell, so i might have some issues separating fantasy from reality but..

 

Ive had stomach pain/acid reflux since my surgery, with omeprazole doing nothing. In the last coupe months, the pain was really bad, and I was eventually diagnosed with H. Pylori. 

When I was complaining about the pain, he said he's be happy to do a EGD to rule out any damage and to do a biopsy to make sure all the H Pylori is gone, but he went on this rant about a side effect/complication of VSG.

He said during surgery, all the nerves are severed (duhhhhh) and that some people will experience continuing nerve pain indefinitely post op. Hmm...never heard of that in my research of VSG. He said it can feel like burning/acid but it's just nerves. He said the treatment - SSRIs since nerve pain is related to the same neurotransmitters. 

Now the back doctor already told me i was crazy and told me ii needed to see a psychiatrist....but now this?? I mean...I have a little background in biology/chemistry, but I cant really buy this....I feel like he was just telling me I was crazy and need to go back to my psych (he said he wont throw his hand in the pot in prescribing anti depressants lol). 

What if I have to live with stomach pain forever??!!

can't the GI doc prescribe them for you seems he's the one making the diagnosis?  If it doesn't work, you can always stop taking them.

Funny thing is im already on them and I have been for a while with no improvement....he didnt want to do it because im already under the care of a psychiatrist and doesnt want to screw with my mental health while trying to fix an unknown/undetermined nerve problem. It sounds like BS to me..but im not a doc. 

I'd get a second opinion just to be sure.

We are going to do the scope soon and go from there. He's too hot to go find another one right now. Man...my priorities are screwed up.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA I have to laugh because I had to get a colonoscopy done pre surgery and OMG is my GI super HOT!!!!!! He walked out to get me from the waiting room and all I could think is OMG is he hot! It was so awkward for him to do that procedure on me, but its done now and I dont need to see him for many more years. I enjoyed it while I did though

UGH!  Cute doc or not, he needs to treat the pain!  I hate docs that try to chalk it up to 'head issues'.   Been there, done that and never again. 

So, I had some serious nerve pain about 8 years ago.  Damaged a nerve in my leg.  Neurologist couldn't figure out why.  I ended up in a brace below the knee to the foot.  I had a floppy foot.  FUN!  Anyhoo...serious nerve pain.  I was put on a tricyclic. It was amitriptyline.  It was a GOD send!  I ended up on it for about 2 years.  However, it really amped up my appetite.  And let's face, I didn't need that.

So...that's my story.  Helped with the nerve pain, but gained lots o' weight.

He did give me some Carafate thank heavens. So far none of the other docs would prescribe it (even when I was dying in urgent care) sooo I kind of trust him tentatively. But I had no idea that long lasting nerve damage could be a potential possibility. I guess it makes sense...just never heard about it. 

 

The pain definitely isnt bad enough to take an appetite ramping tricyclic. But Im glad that you confirmed that is a legitimate remedy and he wasnt just calling me nuts!
