Here I go again.....

Each year I go on an "obli-cation" to visit my aunt. She has no kids of her own and she has been very good to me over the years , tough she is the type of person whose kindness always has a price. I'm sure some of you know the type.

She is old-85-, and still likes to treat me as the kid. This visit she is all about controlling my food. Not so much overt control, but she thinks I should eat exactly as she does. This won't work for me. She is a carb and processed food queen. Today she was insisting that I should eat a Lean Cuisine for dinner tonight. I explained my doctor forbids TV dinners or very many carbs at all. This was hard for her to understand, so I sort of let it go. Then she bought me a bag of Pepperidge Farm Bordeaux cookies on the sly and then told me that they were healthy cookies! LOL!!!!! So, I could go on and on, but I think you get the picture.

Last night though, I did just "give in". Not really- it was a choice, but a WTF type of choice after my dinner was totally sabotaged - too long and drawn out - and I had just sort of had it. So while reading I chose to eat an ice cream sandwich and then about two hours later, the carb monster kicked in and I chose to eat three Brussels cookies.

I dealt with it last night before bed, made my plan and have been true to it today, even though at Starbucks I sure did want some carby crap!

Wish I had better strategies when it comes to Auntie! It's always a stressful visit emotionally, but one that is important I make each year. What's five days out of 365, right?

Now, off to call Elina to get my ass lovingly kicked!

I think brainstorming this with Elina will yield some good strategies.  You are in a tough spot there, because it must be exhausting to deal with the eat-eat-eat mentality you're experiencing.  I don't imagine your aunt really understands your situation.

How many more days will you be there?

Just thinking out loud here, but could you offer to make all of the meals? I know some people (my grandmother did) consider this a slap in the face.

Your maintenance plan will be there for you when you finish this vacation.

Do what you have to do to get through it.

*hugs* Enjoy your aunt.

Tried that approach. No go! Went to the market and picked up food for my own dinner tonight since she was hell bent on the Lean Cuisine. I'm having steak and salad! Yum!!!!! Offered to make pork chops tomorrow when she mentioned not having had them in so long and how much she enjoys them, but again, nope doesn't really want them. Sad.... She used to love my chops done with a balsamic reduction. Oh well......

It sounds like this is what you'll have to do in the future--bring your own foods to fix alongside her LC's.  I know that when I go to my MIL's, I insist on doing the shopping and cooking because all she eats are things like Beanee Weanees, canned soups and things like that.

Hang in there...you can do this!  You fought off the crap they tried to give you at school, you can fight this stuff off too.   I have confidence in you!

Make the pork chops anyway. But make them early. Old folks don't like food that keeps them awake. She might surprise you and eat some.

Relax a little and enjoy your aunt.

Aww Kairk...I feel your pain.  My Mom does some of this crap, but not to the extent of Auntie Dearest.  What's 5 days?  Yep, you'll have to detox, but as with my Mom, I just let her cook what she wants, have a tiny bit and then eat something I need (which I bring with me) from the fridge later.  When I get home, it's back to basics and all I've ever gained is water weight.  Muddle through it and hug her cuz she probably thinks "you need a sandwich"...Good luck and try to have fun.

This happened to me a couple weeks ago, I was at a birthday party..
I brought myself some tuna and I had a piece of fresh mozzarella and roasted red pepper...and did very good...then it came time for desert, I was still picking on my tuna and not feeling deprived at all when my aunt comes by and offers me
A slice of ice cream cake (she knows about my surgery) and I politely decline...and she says oh, but it's ok, it will go down easy, you can have it...I looked at her and said no, I can't...and pushed it away...I wanted to say don't you understand that thinking got me in trouble in the first place....
