Hi sleevers. I was just released from the hospital after spending about 20 hours in the ER.  Since surgery May 23, 2013 I've been losing a lb of day. I can only get in 300 to 350 calories in a day. I was averaging around 24 to 32 ounces of liquids a day. I tried getting more in but I couldn't. Well yesterday I woke up at around 4am because I was having chest pains and I was extremely weak. I laid in bed for a few hours then decided to go to my living and prop down on my couch. I was so weak I tried to get enough strength to make some protein. Well needless to say the energy wasn't there. I got up off the couch and blacked out. Thank God my mom was at my house! She helped me back on the couch and gave me some cold water. About 45 mins later I felt dizzy and blacked out again. My mom got me up and took me to the ER. As soon as I got there they wheeled me to the back and tried to get blood. Well the medical assistant stuck me about 5 times and could  not get any blood. After the 6 stick I felt dizzy and remember telling the guy I didn't feel good and I needed some water. Well that is all I remember because I blacked out again. When I came too they were wheeling me into a private room and told me to change into a gown. They did an EKG and sent another person in to get my blood. She could not get it. They sent in 2 more people to get it. They were all unsuccessful. Well they finally realized I was extremely dehydrated and they wasn't going to get any blood until I got some fluid in my body. After they started the fluid the dr came in and said she needed to draw blood from my Femur. I'm thinking to myself what is she talking about...... Surely she isn't talking to me. Then I asked, "who are you to?" She said YOU!!!...I got to get some blood from your upper thigh close to your groin area. Well after seeing how freaking long that needle was I felt like I was going to black out again. After searching for a I guess a vein for about 10 mins she located one. When the needle went in it hurt like hell and I think everybody in the ER heard me screaming. They did X-rays and A full body CT scan on me. As daylight begin to peep through the the blinds my doc came in and said all my tests came back ok. I was put on 1 week of bed rest and was told to start immediately with puréed food. I was put on a schedule to drink every 45 mins. Well I'm back home and feeling better but I wouldn't wish this ordeal on anybody. PLEASE REMEMBER TO SIP, SIP, SIP!!! Trust me after that experience I have learned my lesson.

I'm so sorry that you had to go through this, but your post will help others.  You really do have to fight for those fluid ounces early on, as you found out the hard way.  I hope your recovery goes more smoothly from now on!

I'm so glad your mother was there and that you got prompt medical care, and that you are feeling better now.

Thank you for posting this -- my surgery is three days away and I really appreciate a strong reminder that job 1 after surgery is getting adequate fluids.
