No straw? Why?

Wow, amazing that your husband is already up and at 'em! I heard from FatKat's mom that she did fine, but I haven't heard more. I'm excited she'll soon be on her own journey, and I'm sure you must feel that way about your hubby. :-)

I'm thrilled for him!

I told him I'll do his diet stages with him (no issue at all, hunger-wise) and I'd forgotten a downside of the fluids stage. EVERYTHING is loaded with Splenda and my guts are in an uproar. I'm looking forward to unflavoured whey that I can add to coffee - needing to practically live in the biffy is a pain.

my doctor allows a straw the reason one is not allowed is because of the theory that you swallow more air , my doctor does not believe it is a problem

but a camel bac is alot better no air and it forces you to drink slower

At the top of the straw there will be air and you swallow that before getting the liquid. It also promotes taking too big of a gulp. I didn't use one at first because that was the instruction from the doc. I've come around to it being okay once your stomach heals but you do swallow more air which will promote burping. If it helps you to get in liquids and using one doesn't cause problems, go for it but I would wait a few months before you do.

I was wondering the same thing. I'm about to be discharged on day 3 and there's a big sign saying no straws. Getting fluid in has been a challenge.

this question came up at my monthly WLS support group meeting this month...the nutritionist's response was almost exactly what sleevegirl said in her post...I am going to try drinking with a straw now--maybe it will help me get my liquids in

When I mix up a protein shake and there's too much foam on top, I drink with a straw and take in a lot less air that way.

My program allows them.

SOME people do swallow more air with a straw. Personally I swallow LESS. Plus I get more fluid in. My camelbak bottle saved my life in the early days. I never would have gotten my fliuds in without it!
