Stealing French fries and other small misdemeanors...

Alan and I went to our favorite watering hole to listen to a new up and coming Blues singer yesterday.  The place is an Irish owened pub and my friend's boyfriend is friends with the owner from the way back in Ireland.  The place was jumping last night and we got the very last place at the bar as every single table was already taken.  The owner was sitting next to us and he was eating the biggest burger that you can possibly imagine with French fries and pie.  The smell was slowly driving me insane.  I kept looking over at his plate, and then making goo-goo eyes at him.  :)  Finally, he realized what I was doing and laughed while offering me a French fry.   "Who me?" I said inocently, " I would never eat something like that",  I said as I stole one off his plate and quickly hid it behind my back.  Alan offered to buy me a whole plate of French fries, but what would be the fun in that?  Plus, me, I  would never eat anything like that.  :)

By the way, the French fries were not even close to being as good as I remember and one was really more than enough.  As a matter of fact, I only ate half of one as I shared it with Alan.  When I was in weight loss phase, I would not have done this.  I would have simply moved to the other side of the room or even left.  There would have been no way that I would have allowed the smell to tempt me.... in maintenane small crimes are permitted.   Alan told me I was being bad...sometimes bad feels terrific.  :)  Here take me away officer, let's see those handcuffs.  :)

The point I am making is that there is a huge difference in my behavior and attitude during the two phases and I still go into one or the other depending on my weight.  When in maintenance, a little crime can be fun and can work as long as you remain vigilant and do not allow yourself to become complacent.  I know that I would not be triggered by the French fry to eat more French fries, if I did not already know this (based on my history and experience) I would not have eaten it.  For example, even in maintenance, French bread is a tough one for me.  I can't really just have a bite.  I want a whole piece and maybe even a second piece.  Ice cream is the same for me, I can't just have a spoonful; I want a cup.  Knowing your history with food and knowing what your triggers are is a huge deal.  There are still foods that I avoid and would not eat because I don't trust myself to just have a bite.  Do you know what your triggers are?  Do you know that the calorie count in one serving is irrelevent if you usually have the whole bag when you eat it?  What do you do when you are confronted with your triggers?  I just keep away from them and do not allow them in the house or anywhere near me, what do you do?

I don't allow them in my house and I don't go around them.

I'm learning to enjoy things again, I've surrounded myself with a cloak of fear and not trusting myself. I'm still losing a tiny bit of weight, so don't consider myself in maintenance yet. However--funny you talk about french fries: Last weekend Haley and I went for a hike in Eastern Washington, stopped at a tiny diner on the way back thru the mountains. We split a salad and a grilled turkey/ham/cheese/veggie sandwich and fries. We each at about half of a half of a sandwich, and maybe 5 fries. I concentrated on the salad. We wrapped it all up and brought it home. Until now I wouldn't have done that at all, being so scared of my slipperly slope. But it was fine, and felt good to not be anxious and just enjoy the meal. It was a GREAT grilled sandwich and the best fries ever. Obviously they change the oil and keep it and the grill clean. If it had been crappy or mediocre food, I would have been fine leaving the leftovers for the diner's garbage. But it was good. In the next day or two we finished our bits of sandwiches (reheated in the toaster oven and crispy yummy), and just now I reheated six fries and had them with ketchup. I'm not scared of a slippery slope with this because I'm not around it much, the fat I'm sure is too much so I only want that kind of thing now and then, not on a normal basis.

Chocolate, however, and yes ice cream....I avoid them, don't buy them, and don't go near them.

I'm glad to be finding a balance, not be anxious and fearful all the time, thinking that today I'm the same person I was 10 months ago so will behave the same way I would have then, and just eat eat eat until I'm miserable. I'm much more aware, I have to be. And I have a huge respect for food now, and what it does for my body...something I never had before.

My son has been into BK lately and I stole a fry the other day.  Geezuz, I don't know when they changed their french fries but I was in 7th heaven for a whooping 5 seconds that it took me to eat it!!!

My triggers are...

Cheesy Garlic Bread

Steak Fries

Hot & Spicy Cheez-Itz (Thanks John!)

Grilled Cheese Sandwiches on Sourdough Bread w/ mediium cheddar (thank you John again!)  LOL, luv ya!

Gourmet Cupcakes (LORD!)

Rainbow Sherbet on a cone (wah!)

See's Candies

anything with cheese

What can I do to prevent any of these mishaps?  Not allow them in my house BUT my daughter loves rainbow sherbet.  That one is probably the easiest on the list to resist.  I am not the strongest person to resist when I'm confronted with this stuff.  I am still working on it.  And I don't wanna know the calorie/carb count Elina!!! 1 day at a time ... that's all I can do.

I'm lucky in that I don't tolerate fried foods well at all - I haven't for years. My weakness has to be Bánh mì (Vietnamese sandwiches), Martinis, and sauces - I am a dipper. I also banned my fiance from baking cookies or anything delicious for the next two months. Not because I find them irresistible, but because I know that I eat out of boredom and will crave "something to do" - so grateful for this surgery at this point, even with the few issues I've experienced. I am a little over a week out and gladly eating (drinking) 300-390 calories a day, enjoying my blissful break from food. I know that in a few months I will want Kale Chips, though - Quite Cheezy Kale Chips are definitely my weakness. Right now, the thing I miss most is my cup of black coffee in the A.M.! ONE MORE WEEK!!!

My French fry story from two days ago look like this......

We were eating at food trucks parked outside the Los Angeles Convention center....(E3 Computer game show)

As I'm eating my shrimp and beef stir fry....(nice.... dude custom made it for me)

I reach over to my nephews tempura plate and pick up a tempura potato slice.

My nephew asks..... Uncle, what's the difference between that and a French fry??????

My answer: This is worse cause it's coated in a flour based batter......than deep fried..... shut-up and eat your food....

I have seen you two months ego, you can have two tempura potato slices with a side of mayo and you will be just fine. :)
