Ferrous Sulfate...the ones that are easier on the stomach have less elemental iron...Id have to take soo many just to get the amount my doc wants. bariatric doc wants me to switch to ferrous gluconate....i was at whole foods and they have all different kinds. Im going to look into some of those. At this point, my doc can bite himself because if he insists on this stuff that kills my stomach, the end result will be that I wont get any iron...soooo.

I think im going to take the Proferrin I ordered.

I was on 80 mgs of Nexium for the first 12 weeks, now I am on 80 mgs Prilosec.   I probably should try the Protonix and Dexilant, too. I have severe Gastritis AND H Pylori.  I have a prescription for Carafate, but I am not taking it because of all the antibiotics I am on. It has been a pretty miserable Sleeve experience so far.....And I have very severe GERD / heartburn.  If I don't take my PPI right away when I wake up, I have horrible burning in my throat and chest, it is awful.  I am not taking vitamin pills, I take some liquid iron, liquid calcium, liquid Vit. D, but that is about it, and I get vitamin infusions (IV vitamins).  I have a GI specialist.

I wonder who I can talk to about the different choices of PPIs as well?

Let us know Dexilant works for you, maybe it is the magic formula?

Im surprised they have you on 80 mg of prilosec...my docs have said 40 mg is usually the max. How/when do you take the liquid iron (do you know what kind of iron) and do they monitor your levels? Ive been doing some research and im starting to believe my long term PPI use is related to my anemia.

I dont see why you couldnt talk to the Gi doc about the different PPIs - presumably, they should be the most qualified for that conversation...

I am surprised, too, about the 80mgs of Nexium.

The iron is from my naturopath's office, it is:

Intergrative Theraputics, Inc.
NF Formulas Liquid Iron with folic acid and B12
Cinnamon Flavor
6 fluid oz bottle.

I keep it in the fridge.

Dexilant works fabulously for me, way better than Prilosec.

Pre-op, they discovered ulcer(s) --the non-h-pylori kind, which were removed during surgery.  pre-op, I was taking protonix 20 mg, and carafate for ulcers.

Immediately post-op, I was given the meltaway prevacid 40 mg, which worked GREAT, but the taste made me puke after about a week (too sweet).  I switched to OTC prevacid capsules, 40 mg, sprinkled in food.  they did not work AT ALL.

At about 6 weeks, i requested protonix, 20 mg again...didn't work.  they bumped it to 40 mg, didn't work.  i asked at 10 weeks to switch back to 20mgs, but twice a day--worked, but not great.

At my 3 month appointment, I told them the protonix just wasn't working like I thought it should.  My surgeon gave me dexilant (30 mg) which worked AWESOME!  I had some "break through acid" in the afternoon which they said I could take tums or an anti-acid, but I only did that a few times, and it's been almost 2 months since I needed that.  These days (almost 6 months out), I never even notice the acid issues when I take the dexilant regularly.  even if i forget a day, no issues--it takes almost a week of forgetting (yeah, I know, bad!) to start the acid back up.

I highly suggest you TRY it...it started being EXTREMELY effective for me in about 4 days...

Also, if you do the tri-****tail for h-pylori, you'll want to take a probiotic to counter-act the heavy duty antibiotics--Culturelle makes a (kids) chewable which is okay (read didn't make me puke)...

This gives me some hope! I have asked and asked for 2 years to try something after prilosec has done nothing....im praying dexilant will be the answer. Id love to have a day without burning acid.

I'm so glad you're getting some diagnoses, since you've been suffering for so long! I hope you finally get some relief.

i actually cycled thru four PPIs before I found one that works - Protonix.  All PPIs are definitely NOT the same.  Each one would work for maybe a few weeks to a couple of months, and then the acid would come back.  But I've been on Protonix for about a year, and it's still working great.

Pre-surgery I took Prilosec and it worked fine.  The PPI that my surgeon sent me home with, Nexium, was next to useless, so I went back to Prilosec.  Worked great for a while then didn't. So my doc put me on Dexilant, same deal.  Finally Protonix.  I was starting to get scared that none would work for me, and then what would I do?  But so far so good.
