My friend who had the sleeve lost a great deal of hair and when she went to a dermatologist he said it was from a lack of veggies at the beginning of our program.

I start my pre-op nutrition class tomorrow and will as them as well but thought I would hear what yall had to say. Has anyone during the beginning added in a veggie rich shake (similar to naked but homemade), blended homemade veggie soup, or had a can of v-8 to get in veggies while on the first stages after surgery?

I ask not only because of the hair thing but the energy that comes from those vitamins in veggies.

I'll also follow up tomorrow and let yall know what the nutritionist says.

I have kept 41 lbs off of the 90 I lost with the band and hoping to finally get on with my journey with a tool that actually helps me.

I'm a month out and have been on soft foods for 2 weeks.  I try and get at least a small portion of soft veggies in my lunch and dinner every day.   Have no clue if that will help with hair loss, but I just find them so important nutritionally.

I have never heard that hair loss was due to lack of veggies but I have heard it is because of lack of protein.  When you start losing it is from a defiency months before.  Some on here have said that they take biotin but I don't know if that will keep it from happening or not.  I just know it is very important to get your protein in each day.

Hmm I will have to look into that one.

It's likely the dermatologist  doesn't understand the hair loss associated with major surgery and rapid weight loss. I have started to figure out that just because their title says "Doctor" it doesn't mean they understand all branches of medicine. I'm sure he's a great dermatologist, but probably sucks as a cardiologist not to mention a WL surgeon.

If your labs are good (and they will be good if you take your supplements as instructed) and you are getting plenty of protein, then the hair loss is easily explained by "major surgery and rapid weight loss". Lack of veggies is an uninformed interjection. The good news is that the body is adaptable and it recovers pretty quickly and the hair grows back, with or without veggies.

Not everyone loses their hair, and some people lose more than others.  It's because of rapid weight loss and the surgery.  Google telogen effluvium.  It's because of the shock to our systems.  I know some people recommend Biotin, but that will really only help your hair grow in faster if it does anything.  I've had at least 70g of protein since the second day of surgery, and I've still had hair loss.  Try not to worry. If it happens, it happens.  It will grow back.  Veggies don't have anything to do with it, but they are definitely a part of a healthy diet.  Just work your plan post surgery

Its not. It's from the shock to the system of anesthesia and the surgery mostly.

If it was the vitamins from veggies, then the fact that we take all those vitamins would stop it and it doesn't.

I smell bull**** from your friends dermatologist.  Sorry.

Hair Loss is common after all major surgeries.  Heres what happens.

Hair normally goes through cycles - a growing cycle and a resting cycle called telogen.  The shock to the body after major surgeries causes the hair to prematurely go into the telogen stage (called "telogen effluvium").  There is some debate about whether its the body's own natural cycles that cause this or some not understood side effect of anesthesia.  Its more noticeable after surgeries because instead of a small percentage of the hair being in this resting state as is normal, a large percentage of the hair is at rest.

The only real cure is time and proper nutrition.  After surgery if you want the hair to come back, do everything you can to support heathy skin and hair.  Many of us use Biotin supplements.  You must pay attention to meeting your protein goals and hydration goals.

You aren't going to do anything to stop some hair loss after surgery - no matter how many veggies you eat.  How much you have and how long it will last depends a lot on your own body and how it responds to the surgery.

Veggies can be a lot of problem after surgery.  They are rich in fiber, and non starchy veggies are not very calorically dense.  The problem is that you are on 600-800 calories a day typically.  The 30 calories you will get from a cup of raw or steamed carrots is 5% of you totally daily intake with virtually no protein.  V-8 juice is a calorie bomb.  8 ounces has 50 calories with only 2g of protein.  Thats 10% of your daily calories roughly.

Cardinal rule - Don't drink your calories.
