my iron tanked after my rny- nothing would absorb yada yada- ended up with iron infusions then took chewable (GAG) iron- hard to find that doesn't taste like crap but worth it if for some reason absorption is the problem!! I started with 60mg elemental iron 3 x day then as my numbers held got to decrease the dose. Now after my revision to a sleeve and after having a hysterectomy (BEST thing EVER), I'm good on just a multivitamin with iron!! Good luck! You'll be AMAZED how much better you feel!!

I hope you are also bumping up your vitamin D. Iron deficiency would definitely contribute to your symptoms.  You should probably be taking at least 4000 u of vitamin D, between your calcium, multivit, and vitamin D supplement. This is what my program recommends.

My iron was really low during the first few post-op months, and I ended up with iron infusions. Since then, my iron and ferritin have been okay and I haven't had to supplement. We'll see what my next  labs show.

wishing you well. It will take a few months to bring up the iron, depending upon how low it is.

I'm sorry you are having iron deficiency issues, but at least you have a possible answer to some of the physical crap that you've been dealing with. I sure hope you can find a supplement that won't cause more trouble.

After VSG, most of us don't absorb ferrous sulfate form of iron that well. When I take iron (only when my multi hasn't got any), I do either carbonyl form (Tender Iron with C from VitaLady.com) or Heme (Proferrin)

Personally, for anyone who is having issues with iron absorption, I recommend Heme iron because it's REALLY well absorbed. A lot of people who can't absorb other forms can get their iron levels up with this. Plus, unlike other forms, you can take it with calcium which is super-convenient. Plus it's not constipating.

I love this board :) Thanks for this info - I think I'll try the Heme because I dont feel like spinning my wheels with all this. I dont KNOW that i have absorption issues, but since ive been taking a multi with iron and considering my lack of periods for the last year, it might be an issue for me. Sounds like this might be the perfect solution for me.
