Protein Coffee vs eggs for breakfast -- why is the coffee more satisfying?
First off -- I am not a coffee drinker! I only started drinking coffee after my VSG because it's cold in my office in the winter, and if you mix in a scoop of Syntrax chocolate truffle, it's a quite tasty, warm and satisfying way to start the day!
Now, I'm almost five months out, the weather is warming up, and I'm trying to "eat", not drink my calories and protein -- and most days, the protein coffee is the only protein drink I have.
So here's my dilemma. The protein coffee really does keep me full and satisfied til lunch most days. On the other hand, if I eat eggs or an omelet, about an hour later I get the "hunger" feeling, that I now know is really my digestive process, acid, etc. and can be remedied with Pepcid or something -- but since I take 40 mg of Nexium twice a day already (and did pre-op), I'm not too keen on adding more drugs, even if they are OTC.
Later in the day, my meals do not usually result in this problem - -just at breakfast.
My question is -- should I just leave well enough alone, and switch to a cold protein drink for the summer? Or should I make more of an effort to not be so dependent on protein drinks?
And, the bigger question -- why does the protein coffee not result in "hunger" an hour later, when real food does? I thought one of our more resear*****lined pals may know the scientific reason for this!
Thanks!
I dont have a scientific answer but I know for me personally, its my acid that makes me hungry after I eat. Eating makes me "hungrier" so i prefer protein shakes to meals. I say - do whatever works to meet your goals. Dont worry about a "wrong" vs "right" way to do things.
(ETA: for a general "scientific" explanation - when we eat, our stomachs have to produce some acid to digest and breakdown the food. Too much acid can cause hunger - even beiing on max strength PPI doesnt always work ...my surgeon did tell me that eating too fast, and eating too much will trigger an over production of acid)

You know - some days I wonder the same thing! I guess the mental advantage for us is that we can always have a shake if we need one vs. a shake is the ONLY thing you can have!
As long as I'm chosing the shake, it's very different than a shake being my only choice (in which case, I'm sure I'd rebel!).
It might be the caffeine - that's what does it for me - and it doesn't take an entire cup for me.
Question about the protein coffee - do you just mix 1 cup of coffee with a scoop of protein powder? I've never made it and wouldn't mind getting in some extra protein...but I never make smoothies or shakes or anything like that...so any recipes would be appreciated!

I don't know about a "cup" of coffee (LOL) - I have a stainless steel cup. I put one scoop of powder in, mix it with almond milk -- sometimes I put a little dark cocoa in so it's not soooo sweet -- mix everything up really well, then slowly add the coffee. That keeps the protein powder from clumping (which it is prone to do when added directly to a hot liquid). The protein powder you get will tell you it's maximum temperature to avoid clumping.
Muttlover, not a resear*****lined, well unless its finance. But I find that coffee cuts my appetite. I have been mixing 1/2 scoop of Isopure No Carb protein in my coffee in the mornings and it truly keep me satisfied. How about if you have the protein coffee in the AM and if you feel the need to eat something, have the eggs then? That'll give you an extra protein boost.
If it isn't broken, why fix it? You may find that you need the eggs further out and your sleeve is fully healed. Protein drinks don't always hold me, but for some people they work. Sometimes, I feel more restricted in the morning and a shake goes down easier. If you are trying to use solid food, nonfat plain Greek yogurt with a few berries, and sweetener (if you need it). Fage NF plain yogurt has 18 grams of protein in it. Sometimes, I'll add a little more protein and since I am in maintenance, a little muesli or something else with a bit of fiber.
i like my coffee plain, so protein coffee hasn't worked for me.
