Did I just dump? Or is it a panic attack?
I didn't think I was a dumper. Well I just had one of those Atkins treats. And about 3 minutes after I had it I started sweating like crazy and feeling jittery and my heart racing. Took about 20 to 30 mins to go away. I haven't dumped before and I have been having carbs like that before. So could this be a panic attack and unrelated or could I have actually dumped? As I do get them now and than. (panic attacks) I'm just almost 3 months post op.

A small percent of "sleevers" do dump. Most do not. That's why I'm not sure if it was a dump.

Hi there,
did you have the sleeve or the bypass? Anyway, I have had a snack that had actual sugar in it and I didn't have that reaction, however I did have an elevated heart beat and it latest for maybe 15 min. No other signs or symptoms though. But everyone reacts differently. Dumping syndrome is not usual with the sleeve, but is common with the bypass. I would write down when and if it happens again and what you ate or did right before the symptoms appear, that might be a way to find out whether or not it was dumping or a panic attack. Good luck.
Hugs,
Rita
Oh yes we do DUMP!! and we can dump on ANYTHING...simple sugars/carbs, protein, fats. Alimentary hypoglycemia seen in 5-10% gastro only surgeries, and also same dumping syndrome seen in non-surgery/unaltered folks!
you'll never see a stat on it in VSG...its that uncommon. I never dumped pre-VSG. Of the 3 dumping episodes I had within 6 months post op then never again.... I reported NONE to my surgeon. 2/3 episodes I dumped on protein, lo sugar, lo fat. Protein food I had used many times before....then dumped on it.... ...had same food after dumping on it...no problems...totally random!
First time 2 months out reg diet..was so dang scary...like rut roh..ER time..but it was manageable after the scary as **** (literally) symptoms passed and I had that classic EXTREME fatique following...laying down and sleepin it off. Wakin up I was alright! I always had the extreme fatique after every episode. There's a VSG gal on YouTube that ate some milk duds or sumthin doesn't show her pre-dumpin symptoms...just her lyin in bed w/ extreme fatigue hours after dumping.
The symptoms you had are indeed commonly seen in true dumping either early or late. ...same in reactive hypoglycemia reacting to sugar...eating ice cream on an empty stomach for i.e. is a big reactive hypoglycemic trigger I think OH has it as #1 on a list of avoid foods not only for wl but for rh triggers.. when I was researching dumping ..
But you've had panic attacks before...and your confused about which is which. If those symptoms are common in your panic attacks....I would think panic attack more....cuz
Atkins treats aren't usually loaded w/ "real" sugar mostly sugar alcohols....your onset of symptoms 3 minutes after eating it. In dumping NEVER that fast...either early 15/30-60 minutes or late 1-3 hours dumping syndrome. No mention of feeling queasy nauseous (usually not vomiting tho) mention nothing about horrific dhr (soooo common!) ....that atkins bar staring back at ya undigested/unabsorbed when you got up from the toilet. ...nor the extreme fatigue following. The symptoms you had...passed in 30 minutes....Ive never experienced nor read of anyone posting here w/ symptoms that resolved that quickly. But that doesn't mean it can't happen!
I wrote a blog on DUMPING in VSG...after I was told by "vets" here there IS NO DUMPING in VSG., what I experienced all 3 times was NOT dumping and I was crazy. Like I always says tho don't...F*** with KRAAZY!! lmao!! and Ive seen VSGrs post here through the years...that tells me..Im not the only 'crazy' one.
I listed some ways to relieve, recover quicker... An interesting link to Medscape article on Gastrectomy Dumping SYNDROME.(3 or more symptoms!)...gotta scroll down some for that link..explains most of the physiology involved (osmolarity of the GI tract) might be interesting to you.
Jara I don't think your crazy,....heads up tho huh my first time dumping on simple sugar..I figured I deserved it, and it wouldn't happen again if I avoid simple sugar/crap carbs on an empty stomach...but when I dumped on proteins 2 months later, and then 1.5 months later...I knew I there was more to it...and I wasn't crazy either!
Take care of YOU!!
Wow, that's the first I heard on dumping on protein. Was it that you had too much protein without any carb balance? I guess it's possible cause when I was pre-op I tried to loose weight on my own and I thought only eating protein was good but I saw a nutritionist and she said it can unbalance your blood sugar if you don't have carbs too. Which of course I was shocked she said that but it makes since. The body does need carbs good carbs that is. Not that peanut butter cup thing I ate last night. lol That's why one of the reason I'm hesitate to go strictly low carb like under 20 like some do on here. I keep it around 70 to 80 a day. That way I can get more fiber too.

Dumping with VSG is much more common than not It may not be a s severe as with RNY, but I have no personal point of reference so I can't say for sure.
Mostly dumping occurs after eating something sweet and fatty like ice cream or a milkshake. The more liquid the offending substance the faster it will exit your stomach and cause the symptoms you describe only with vomiting and diarrhea, followed by fatigue.
Sometimes it is very random and not related to a particular type of food. Since our stomachs are altered, liquids seem to exit faster without much processing by our stomachs. I can see dumping on an atkins treat since they are usually high fat. Sugar alcohols seem to be very irritating to the digestive system also.
The farther out, the less likely one is to dump. Take it easy on your tummy and stay away from sugar, high fat and processed type foods. Dumping kept me from sweets and I still feel queasy if I eat to much of something I shouldn't have anyway

My dietician and surgeon say that there is a lot of new evidence coming out that suggests that it is very possible for a small amount of the sleeved population to experience dumping much like the rny population describe. It has never really happened to me but I find it fascinating and I'm curious to keep my eyes on this development.
