15 Reasons To Stop Drinking Soda

The next time you go grocery shopping, you should consider skipping the soda aisle.  These 15 facts should motivate you to just “walk on by“!

1. Soda will increase your cholesterol levels by up to 11%
2. Thanks to the sugar and acid in soda, it is bad for your teeth and causes tooth decay
3. Contributes to weight gain and obesity
4. Drinking soda can increase your risk of having kidney stones
5. Contains phosphoric acid whi*****reases your risk of osteoporosis
6. Causes dehydration and contains pH levels that advance the aging of your skin
7. Studies show that drinking two or more sodas a week increases your risk of developing cancer
8. Drinking too much soda can cause insomnia due to the amount of caffeine
9. The carbonation in soda can cause acid reflux or heartburn
10. According to a 10-year study, individuals who drink two or more sodas a day have a 500 percent waist expansion in comparison to those who do not drink soda!
11. Diet sodas contain the artificial sweetener aspartame which has been shown to cause seizures, migraines, visual problems, anxiety, and other disorders.
12. Mountain Dew, Fresca and other citrus-flavored sodas contain Brominated Vegetable Oil (BVO) which has been banned in over 100 countries but not in the US.  Studies show that BVO, which is a flame retardant, can cause damage to the heart and muscles, liver damage, neurological conditions, and more.
13. Aluminum cans and plastic bottles of some sodas have linings that contain Bisphenol A (BPA) which can cause fertility problems, developmental and behavioral problems in infants and children, heart problems, and other disorders.
14. Increases your risk of diabetes

17. According to my sister it comes back up faster than it goes down.

While I completely agree with not drinking pop, some of the points stretch credibility. For instance:
#1. Sugar definitely increases cholesterol, but where's the study linking ALL pop to increased cholesterol?
#2 - not all pop has sugar, and unless you hold it in your mouth instead of swallowing the acid isn't going to make much difference to your teeth.
#4 - how?
#6 - umm - how does a beverage make you dehydrated? (Please don't say it's the caffeine - caffeine is not a diuretic)
#7 - what studies?
#8 - not all pops contain caffeine.
#10. 500% increase? So if I have a waist measurement of 35, then drink some pop, it'll suddenly go up to 175"?
#11 - rarely - in some people.

I don't know enough about the other claims to have an opinion, let alone questions. Where did you find the list?

I've copied and pasted this list to share with my 14 year old daughter, who has become quite a soda drinker, and is very concerned about her appearance.  I'll also share with my DH who also drinks soda a lot and doesn't try to stop my 7 year old from doing so, though I do.  Thanks!

Soda was by far the hardest thing for me to "kick" on this whole journey.  I pray for strength to NEVER drink it again!  On another hand, my daughter has never liked it but I think she feels pressure to be "cool" and drink it like all her other friends.  I will read this to her!  I never want her to have the same addiction I had to soda which started when I was her age (11).
