Everyone above is right. Yes, it's tax deductible in the amount in excess of your 7.5% exclusion. So deduct away.

I am 100% certain that this is a tax write off. Everything from surgery to pain meds, over the counter meds, etc. Pretty much anything that has to do with the surgery can be written off. Talk to your tax person for specifics.

I just had my tax return done at HR Block today, and according to their tax book you can even deduct weight-loss foods that go beyond what regular food costs, plus any doctor-recommended exercise programs.

Sadly, I've never been able to show that my medical expenses of any sort exceeded the 7.5 percent rule. But I would think that for self-pay patients, this tax deduction would be essential.

I kind of think my protein supplements and vitamins only replace the cost that I'm saving in food by eating less.   I added up everything last night All 2012 health receipts, what state tax would be, what local tax would be, property tax and the total figure is over the $11,900 standard deduction but than when I  subtracted the 7.5 % of the adjusted gross it brought the number down to just a little over 10,000 so unless there's something else that I'm not thinking of that can be itemized besides what I mentioned it's better to take the standard deduction.  (Even though I was self pay, )  Probably is because I'm not getting all my surgery related bills in 2012 some came in 2013 and are still coming.   :-(

I deducted mine back in TY2008.

I did use a Health Care Savings Account for 5000 of it and you can't deduct that because it's pre-tax money. But I deducted the rest.
