What you thought you knew about obesity is all wrong --- CNN story
This is a very interesting short piece by a doc in Indiana who often writes about medical myths. The piece talks a little about obesity myths and about him and his wife losing a little weight -- but he ends with this:
"I don't tell you this because I think this is what you should do, or because I think it's the key to getting thinner. I tell you this because more and more, I think that the journey to sustained weight loss is a very personal and individual path. Perhaps our problem is we're trying to find a one-size-fits-all solution. I'm not sure that exists."

“Not many of us are living at our best. We linger in the lowlands because we are afraid to climb the mountains. The steepness and ruggedness dismay us, and so we stay in the misty valleys and do not learn the mystery of the hills. We do not know what we lose in our self indulgence. What glory awaits us if only we had the courage for the mountain climb. What blessing we should find if only we would move to the uplands of God.? JRM
I read the actual research article when it came out. The one piece that surprised me a bit was the breakfast piece. Everything else I already knew from my doctor. I will talk to him about the necessity of eating a protein rich breakfast or just having some coffee. I am curious if maybe this might be a quick and easy way to cut some calories as the study implies. I will not make any changes until after I speak with my doctor at support group.
I don't have much faith in any of those studies he is relying on. I do think that it is an individual thing. So much goes into how we metabolize food, that it would be impossible to apply the same methods to everyone.
If you want to have a true picture of how not to get fat in the first place, look to the past. Look to the times when people didn't have processed foods, lots of sugar if any, food galore right at your fingertips. Look to the time when there were no cars, people grew their own food, people had to do physical work just to put a meal on the table. Kids didn't sit in front of TVs, play video games for hours, drink sodas and eat junk food and candy in place of natural whole food.
If you want to lose weight and get healthy, eat and live the way your great, great grandma lived. It isn't always possible in these times, but I would love to live a more natural lifestyle. Americans are the fattest people on earth. They may have a longer life span, but it is because of modern medicine.
I am 63 years old and I have witnessed the change in how people live and eat. Each generation is getting fatter and fatter and less healthy.
